ok guys , I have an 83 K5 with the 305 /700r4/208. It has a Quardajet carb on an edelbrock performer intake. The carb has an electric choke. The previous owner has a wire going from the choke to the fuse box , but I am not sure that it is hooked up correctly. I need some info on how to adjust the choke correctly and how to wire / where to run the wire for the choke.
It takes cranking it up and keeping it running with the gas pedal for a few minutes before it will stay running , so i am guessing that the choke is not operating correctly , please help me with some of your knowledge on this , thank you. Also some info on how to adjust the high idle , which I am guessing is for the choke/initial startup.thanks

Can't help you re wiring, my truck's too far away to look it up.

IIRC if you're working the gas pedal after startup, it won't stay on the high-idle cam?
What does it do when you're pumping the pedal a few times, and then start it up without touching the gas pedal again?

I've always done the high-idle adjustment as trial and error - turn the adjuster in, if it's running too high turn it back out; again, when you do this, don't touch the gas pedal after you start the motor.

it is wired so that it gets power when you turn the ignition on. if i pump the pedal a few times before start up sometimes it will idle high and if i tap the gas pedal it will return to the normal idle , but not always sometimes it will start and immediatly die until i start it a few more times , then it will stay running , almost like it is working sometimes but not all the time as it should .runs great after it gets running , I would just like to be able to hit the key and have it operate as it should and start up instead of having to crank it up 3 or 4 times to keep it running.

Check for power at the choke, Choke spring could be shot. Adjust the choke until butterfly just closes and try it. Tighten more until you get the result you want. Takes time to get it right. The Choke pulloff should open butterfly a little (1/8" approx Some Quads have a screw to adjust). when engine starts. Engine has to be dead cold when you start it to know what you have. Should be wired thru an oil pressure switch so it only works when engine is running. High Idle has to be set right also.

it does have power at the choke , but as soon as you switch the key on you get power to the choke whether it is running or not. What would be the proper way to set the high idle? and also about wiring it through the oil pressure switch , how would I do that ? Run a wire from the choke and tap into the wire from the oil pressure switch that goes to my gauge? Then not even have a wire coming into the cab from the choke since , if I am understanding this right , once the engine is started the signal from the oil pressure switch would activate the choke , correct me if I am wrong please. thank you

Quick fix: spray the linkage in silicon/teflon spray, make sure nothing is stuck; bump up the high idle a little. Aircleaner off, engine cold, turn key to IGN ON (don't start it, though): what does the choke plate do?

yup, it's simply the ignition being turned on, juice to the choke spring heats it up and pulls the coke open... you should be able to watch it open over a few minutes with just the key turned on.. if not, you adjust it by loosening the 3 screws and turning the choke cover...

ok, thanks a lot guys , I will try these things first thing in the morning. should i tie the power wire for the choke into the oil pressure sender wire so that it operates only when the engine is running or just leave it as is where it comes on with the key just being turned

I'd leave the oil pressure sensor wire alone. You'll just confuse the gauge.
I would just confirm operation of the choke as the next step.

keep in mind that the electric choke is just functioning as a timer, and by rotating the choke housing you are increasing/decreasing the timer, turning the key on sets it off - even if wired into the oil pressure switch....IE the choke has NO idea what the temp of the motor is

Thanks for all the input guys !! I went out last night cleaned all the linkage with carb cleaner then sprayed it down good with some liquid wrench silicone lube , turned the high idle screw up just a tad and turned the black plastic choke cover counterclockwise a little . just went out this morning after it sitting all night and pumped the gas twice and started it right up and it stayed running , I let it run for about two minutes , blipped the gas pedal and it came down to the normal idle and ran great , so evidently ya'lls suggestions worked , thanks for all the help brothers. hopefully it will continue to work as it is supposed to. :thumb:

On the 83 the choke wire should come through the circuit with the oil pressure sender above the oil filter on a small block . Not from the fuse box directly . Factory did that so the choke won't work with no oil pressure , better if someone stalls out than drive with no oil .

so Pauly , I have two oil pressure senders? I thought the one by the distributer was the only one? I dont have an idiot light , just a gauge. I do know that on a 93 siverado that I used two own , it did have two sending units , but I was unaware that the earlier models had two also. I will be sure to check that out first thing in the morning , thanks for the info !

ones an oil pressure sender, the other is an oil pressure switch.... iirc, the switch will be the one next to the dizzy...
