quadrajet

The quadrajet is a great carburetor, and is set up excellent for off road because of the jet placement and fuel bowl.

On the old quadrajets, a parts store kit may not be the best fix. But don't give up on them. I have been building them for years and now with my new shop, quadrajets is all I do.

You can't over carb with the quadrajet because it only flows the cfm the engine can pull. Most can flow a max of 750 cfm, while some will flow up to 800.

I hope to be on this board more now since I need to give a little more attention to my 89 blazer.

What is wrong with the rebuild kits? Or are you talking about the hard parts wearing out?

Mostly the rubber parts and floats don't hold up to methonal enhanced fuels we get at the pumps today.

Yea, hard parts wearing out. I used to just put auto store kits in, and kept finding more and more things needing done. Front shafts wear and need bushings to prevent vacuum leaks. Secondary air valve plastic cams are cracked. To fix these, you have to grind down screws to remove. Plus, the kits generally have issues with accelerator pumps. The plunger will swell with today's fuel and won't work right. Nothing wrong with trying a store kit and self fix, but I just want to keep people from giving up on the quadrajet and going to an Eddy, or Holley type. That happens all too often. The kit also doesn't have float, jets, rods, power piston spring, fuel filter, etc. takes a bunch to bring them back to better than new, but still much less expensive than going aftermarket and the Qjet is better in many ways.
I did a sheet to show comparison but can't attach it here.

cliffshiperformance.com is good place to get a quality kit including the float with the basic kit. He also has a hi performance kit with just about everthing you need to properly rebuild a quadrajet except the bushing kit for the throttle shafts.

He has a quadrajet forum and you can talk to him on the phone when he is available for specific help.

Are there "kits" or parts out there now that DO work with ethanol? I wondered what the effect would be on the non-metallic parts in the carbs...

How much do you charge to re-bush the throttle shafts? I know it took a specific (expensive), relatively uncommon bit ("J"?) to even get to the right diameter for the bushings I managed to get my hands on years ago, but it's a pain to do right.

Yes, you can get good parts. I get my parts from Cliff, he has kits available also. Product quality is very good, as most things are custom made.

I charge $45 to re-bush the primaries on a base plate.
