so i got some rust on the outside rear quarter panels. im wondering if anybody just cut the fender section out and traced the pattern from that to a donor panel cut that out and welded it on? i figuer i wont see the lines to bad if i bed linered around it kinda in a fender flare pattern. has anyone done this or am i gonna have a hell of a time getting my body lines and molding to jive?

I say do it and post pics of your progress. There has been some talk about modifying the rear wheel well to make em larger, to match the front. I havent seen it done yet.

It's easier to cut the patch piece first, then clamp it over the repair area and trace out what needs to be cut.

This is my driver's side repair I did, in sequence.

what i started with:

patch cut:

I hacked the lip off and clamped the patch in place:

Cut along the dotted line :D

Patched the inner part:

Then tacked in the patch after some fine tuning:

Welded in, a bit of fill and sanding and this is where it's at.

I made sure I cut my patch so it ended up close to the body line. That part is nice and rigid so it's a lot easier to keep the whole thing straight.

Looks good, I need to figure out what to do with my Burb, no patches avail for the inners.

If you're talking about the area I patched, it is available through LMC...just gotta look in the pick-up catalog. I know the spare tire tub isn't though.

I had a decent rust free 8 foot box i used for all my patching.
