a frineds mom has an early 90's chevy lumina with the 3.1 v6 and automatic tranny with o/d....she says that when getting off the interstate or anytime slowing down from around 60 mph the car will just shut off...no stumble or anything...just like you turned the switch off....it only does it if you leave it in o/d and doesnt do it if left in drive...anyone have any idea as to what it may be or what to look for??

Start by checking the Fuel pump. I have a 97 Lumina with the same motor, and when this problem occured that was the issue. It would lose fuel pressure for a moment and shut down. May also be the fuel filter, usually if it doesn't do it in drive it is because it isn't needing to shift so the RPM's dont drop suddenly

have the car scanned for error codes, chances are theres a problem code with your name on it, and a diagnostic chart to fix the problem. its the joy of modern electronic engine controls ;)

TCC solenoid staying on leaving the torque converter clutch locked up. Just like pulling up to a stoplight with the clutch out. Engine stalls when coming to a stop. Try to put it in neutral after getting up to highway speed and then stopping. Should be able to put it back in gear and pull off.

I don't beleive there is a TCC on the Lumina. I tore the trans partially down on these and they only have three solenoids and they are the shift solenoids, I know as I currently have one that is bad.

There are 3 and 4 speed trannies available in early 90's luminas. Pretty sure that there are also lockup and non lock up versions of both. But I've been wrong before.

That may be, in 95 they changed to the 4l60e tranny in all of them and it is a non-lockup version IIRC.

4L60e is a rear drive transmission.

4T60 or 4T60e is probably the transmission in question. The 4T60E came out in 92 according to Wikipedia and featured a lockup converter.

There are two versions of the 4t60e, it changed in 95 and was used on all 3.1 V6 engines until 2000. The later version according to Chev is not a lockup type, but I may be wrong. Yes you are right about it being the 4t not 4l.

that was my thoughts at first but it doesnt "buck and jerk" like having the clutch out....it just shuts off....like you shut the switch off
