So I decided to take my frame completely apart to clean it up really good and paint it. (if I had know how much of a pain all those rivets were gonna be I wouldn't have even considered it though:doah:) Now I am getting ready to put it all back together and was wondering about what bolts to use. I remember seeing a couple other people on here that have taken their frames apart, what did yall use? Looking at the various places to order bolts I see they are most common in 13 and 20 thread, would 13 be alright or do I need to go with 20? Also I am planning on using prevailing torque lock nuts, good choice? Also would yall go with washers on both sides, one side, or neither? Last question, where have yall found that is the cheapest to order from? Thanks.

One more question, the holes currently are about 7/16, should I stick with that or drill them all out to 1/2?

link no work buddy.

i stay 7/16 and get a bolt with some smooth shank on it to fill the hole a bit and still let you tighten it down good.

also use crimp nuts to hold them tight. these are a lock nut much better than nyloc.

and grade 8 is what you want.

yup, grade 8, fine thread with pinch-lock nuts...

I like serrated flange bolts, but not serrated nuts... I just ordered a bunch of flanged pinchlock nuts this morn from the Bible, ummm McMaster-Carr...

Flanged bolts in Grade 8, prevailing torque, or pinch lock nuts and a flat washer under the nut. Fine thread is nice, but it's easier to cross thread so i would probably stick with the coarse thread.

I don't think you need to get carried away and use hardened washers.

I would spend some time getting your frame level, and dead square before torquing everything down...then double check it after everything is torqued down.

Yea, its an 88 frame and there is a set of frame specs and dimensions posted in the tech articles for an 88. I was gonna go by that and spend some time squaring it all up while thy're still somewhat loose, then tighten it all down.

Why not serrated? They hold like crazy... Damn near permanent in some applications.

The reason I don't like them in many (and this is one) is because they tear up the bolt area so badly IF/orWHEN he takes it back apart. This is CK5, it will be taken back apart....:wink1:

That said, the serrated ones do hold great. But my luck is that it will have to be taken back apart. If holding is a concern then loctite is easier to use. I use lots of it at work. I think I use a 2 oz bottle in about 2 months. I will say thats the blue stuff. We do sometimes use the red though.

it's all about the green.... :wink1:

I go thru about a bottle of blue and red in 2 weeks this time of year... :doah:

do love the crazy green stuff tho....

I like a combination of fasteners I guess. I definitely prefer a double locking system, whether it be a serrated bolt and nut or a serrated bolt and pinch lock nut. Sometimes, its a high alloy loc washer and a graded nyloc. Whatever fits the bill at the time.
