I have the ring and pinion out of my 14 bolt in my garage that was removed by a local shop. the bearings are still pressed onto the ring gear and carrier, and the pinion is still as one whole third member (they unbolted those 5 or 6 bolts by the yoke to get it off). My question is can i just drop them both back in and not have to worry about setting the backlash and whatnot? shouldn't it be the same if the shims are still where they were?

Assuming they just took it apart and didn't replace anything, you'll need to know how far they backed off the side adjusters. Since you probably won't know this you'll need to set you're backlash to used gear specs (again, assuming you are using used parts). Pinion depth should be fine if you have the shims that came out from under the pinion support.

Is this a 14 bolt FREE floater or a 14 bolt SEMI floater? The free floater has the side adjusters, but the semi has shims.

Either way I'd check the pattern just to make sure.

"full floater"
:D

Is it a stock gearset? Why was it taken out? You can put the pinion back in with the shim but you have to set the backlash. If you sont know what it is set it around .010-.012 and check the pattern, then open it up as needed. Hope they marked the caps.

Oh and if it is a semi floater, it has a shim and an adjuster.
