Question about off-road trailers???????

Here's a couple of sites for companies that make 4wd style trailers that double as Campers:

Kamparoo Kampers
4x4 trailers

Both are kinda spendy price wise, but your time is saved in not fabbing together a homemade piece.

I've thought about using a 1/2 ton short box bed/frame for a trailer. But instead of putting a drop in camper, I'd just use a Bed tent, this way it would be lighter to tow and have more visibility to the rear. I'd run a similar axle as the rear axle of my blazer for spare parts too. My thought is even with a pintle hitch, a 1/2 ton bed is still going to have some manuverability issues on the trail since it is still wide. Plus the approch and departure angles would stink.

I'm really leaning twords one of the two trailers listed above. I'd be able to carry all I need, plus have the tent high and dry (my dome tent floor got wet 3 out of 4 trips this year), plus the tents are quick to set up.

I would love an M101 trailer!

That would be cool. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

But I'll bet it'd be one heavy bastard! /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

There are 47 M101 trailers going up for gubmint auction at Ft. Riley Kansas on Feb 15.

Actually, No. A trailer that flexes will be a bastid to tow. Trailer springs are short and stiff specifically so that they don't sway around corners or in a cross wind.

I consider these required reading when it comes to trailers:

Even if you aren't going to build one.

I was following a truck pulling an flat OD green trailer in Livermore the other day. I tried to get the guys attention but couldn't. Looked like military surplus with a pintle hook, D rings on the back, but the tires were pretty tall, maybe 33's and aftermarket. It also looked like they added inboard shocks to the leaf springed axle to reduce bounce. It might have been an M101 but with some customization. Didn't look too heavy and the shocks probably help keep it from bouncing down the highway. I have the same problem with space. When I head out to Nevada with just my buddy and I, I remove the rear seat and replace it with a bar that goes across the back to keep the gear from sliding forward. But, when the rugrats want to go camping, the only space is behind that back seat and it ain't much.
