There is a velocity joint (double u-joint) arrangement with a very small diameter shaft connecting the front drive-shaft to the front differential.

Can the front driveshaft from a later K-5 be used. Seems like there should be a heftier through piece than what's on my 1973.

What are my options?

The 73 uses a Spicer style driveshaft (yoke on transfer case). Later ones (~1978) use a Saginaw style driveshaft (flange on transfer case). These later ones use a S44 (roughly the size of a 1330) joint in the double cardan part as compared to your 1310 shaft. I believe the splines are the same.

You could have a Jeep front driveshaft on your 73. I've seen people do this before. The splines are much smaller.
