OK, so my pinion seal is leaking. I have the factory manual for my truck (the BIG one, not the Haynes) and they reference needing a tool (P/N J 8614-01 - they call it a "Pinion Flange Holder and remover") to do the job, but when I read through The Differential Book I bought from Randy's Ring and pinion, they don't mention needing it.

I went out and bought the seal, and it doesn't look complicated, but I was wondering if I actually needed the special tool.

I understand all about measuring the preload on the crush sleeve, and marking threads, etc, but I am wondering what tools I need to get the Yoke itself off. Looks to me that once I pull that, the seal is a piece of cake.

I did search, but most of the info a found was for 14bff (mine is the 9.5 Semi float).

Thanks in advance for advice.

Same procedure as the 10 bolt.

I've never bothered marking threads, I doubt marking threads on a piece that is torqued down that tight gets you very close to what the preload was originally.

Not saying it's right, but I've pulled a few 10 bolt pinions off, and simply tightened the nut after reinstalling, never had a problem. Playing with fire, but it's possible it will be fine with that method.

The only "right" way to do it is to replace the crush sleeve per the manual.

In addition to the nut I beleeb. I haven't done that with the few seals I've done though.
