I just finished about 3 hours and around 30 miles of 50/50 trails and pavement. Everything has been working normal but today as I was putting down the pavement to my playground I smell trans fluid,I pull over and have a look bottom side and see what looks like a pint or so of trans fluid strategicly placed all over exhaust (more smoke),T Case and trans pan. Seems to be comming from under the inspection cover area (front seal, pump???) I went about my buisness and carried on to the trail, over bolders,up and down hills and not again did this happen? I thought at forst it came out the dip stick tube but positivly not.
So, I have never so much even droped the pan on an auto let alone fix one (always prefered rowing gears....before). Ive done more clutches and a few Samuri trannies but nada auto. Whats going on here, is this fine Trans King rebuild that was done 15K ago about to leave me walkin home?? BTW its in an 84 with a 350/700R4 setup.

Sounds to me like the torque vert lock switch, located right near the filler tube (a bit further back though).

I had an issue identical once when I first bought my 86. I was OD w/ a R4 for about an hour round trip - On the way in, I suddenly started smoking heavy and wondered what blew. Stopped, checked.....Noted nothing major, just saturation everywhere and a very minor drip. It wouldnt surface again in D.....but almost immediately re-surfaced in OD. Pressure blew the switch at/around the contacts and sprayed the exhaust which equates to a smoke screen.

Just my experience (seemingly related).

Hope it helps and G/L.
