Every wiring diagram I have looked at only shows seven wires going to the turn signal switch, yet there is eight going to it. I know what the seven do but what is the eighth (black) for on my truck it is a constant hot (on not temp) and when disconnected doesn't seem to make a difference.

Got a pic of what you're talking about? I think I may know, but I want to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

If you count the wires there are eight there this picture is from oreilly and is the turn signal switch for a 73-83 gm truck. the 8th wire is connected to the brass plunger thing circled

Isnt that the hot wire for the horn?
i looked all over alldata (more like somedata) and couldnt find a pic of that harness at all.

could be I don't have a horn also have a gt steering wheel, but I thought the horn used a ground on the steering wheel.

I believe it does ground on the 3 srews on the rubber ring thing that holds the metal cup on. But does have a hot as well, will shock you pretty good too, if you go into the column and forget to unhook the battery. My vote is for horn wire as well.

yep you are grounding a power wire to the steering column. thats why you would have a power wire to it.
there is a piece that either doesn't come with a gt wheel or is easily lost that that is needed to make the horn work on those wheels. i dont have a horn on my gt for that reason. but i know you can get it seperate
pop the center cap out of the wheel and see if there is a wire atached to the horn button
