My k5 has a 6.2/4L60E combo. I live in south Louisiana, so we have lots of mud. I'm considering finding a 6.0/4L80E combo to put in my truck. What do you guys think?

What he said.

Random but that should be a 4L60. GM didn't put the electronically controlled 700R4 in them until '93.

I do like the 6.2, especially the fuel economy, I just don't think it will do the job for serious mud. If I had access to rock crawling I would leave it.

I didn't know that about 4L60 and 4L60E. I do know that I don't like the one I have. I've got a 2wd NV4500 I was wanting to overhaul and swap in there, but if I go to a six liter I'll try to get a 4L80E.

Yeah, somewhere around our time frame the TH700R4 magically became the 4L60 and the TH400 the 3L80.

As I currently own a '90 K5 with the 6.2/700r4 (4L60) and an '03 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0L/4L80E I can say that the 6.0L will literally blow the K5 out of the water in the power department. I would absolutely love to have the 6.0L/4L80E in the K5, but considering the time, effort, and cost involved to do so it will probably never happen.

For the money that you would spend on converting, new fuel sender, motor accessories etc. you would be better off spending the coin on a Turbo.

While you have about half the effective RPM range of a Gas motor you can compensate that by gearing and what gear your running your transmission in while mudding. A turbo diesel also despite common misconception is at home in the mud as the Increased load on the motor builds boost quickly. I ran a 95 4x4 6.5 with a nv4500 through countless miles of muddy trails on a deer lease I had down by marble falls for years without any problems. I dont know if you have ever ran a stick in the mud but it is alot different from an auto, and not nearly as easy in the thick muck, As when you shift you have a tendency to loose wheel speed and start bogging down. This is getting off topic, just consider that the cost is about the same.

My Daily Driver which is an 01 2500hd with a 6.0 and 4l80e would blow my 95 out of the water on the interstate, However it has bogged down more than a couple of occasions in the mud. where the 95 plowed on through.

fallout, a turbo is something I will consider when the time comes. As far as the transmission, I agree that an automatic is better in thick mud. I just need a better auto than what I have.

You could always run a TH400, or if you really need OD you can put a 4L80E behind the 6.2, but it would need a stand alone controller.
