A buddy of mine picked up an old jeep (42' I believe). He's having a little carb trouble. He's wondering if there's a way to fix a stuck needle without having to spend the cash on a rebuild kit, as the internals all look pretty clean. I haven't messed with carbs enough to give him any sort of useful advice. He thinks it's stuck closed as the carbs not getting any fuel. What say you?

Thanks in advance :)

He might be able to just take the carb apart and free the stuck needle valve up and clean up any crap in there with a spray can of carb cleaner, but most likely the gasket wont survive the removal process,so he'll probably have to get a jiffy kit to rebuild it...I have not bought one in years myself,so I cant say how much that will cost, but if its a 1 barrel carb I bet its less than 15 bucks, but he'll probably need carb numbers to order one,I doubt a store will have on on the shelf for something that old..

I would try spraying carb cleaner in the fuel inlet where the gas hose connects, and down into the air bleed tube up top --that'll fill the bowl up and then it can soak in awhile and hopefully dissolve any varnish holding the needle valve closed, then tapping on the carb near the needle valve with a screwdriver handle might free it up,if its just stuck closed...

First things first. I would assume there is a mechanical fuel pump being from 1942? or did you mean a 4.2 carbed straight 6 from the 80s. Either way, remove the fuel feed line from the carb and place into a bucket or jar and crank the engine over. Does fuel come out?

Start there.
