The engine or the tranny?
The engine will be fine since it has it's rev limiter, the governor.
The tranny could get hurt by dumping the clutch or trying to shift it by force with high RPM but the manual in the GM trucks is pretty tough so I would say no to both.
:D

doing that once or twice wont hurt anything, but repeadly doing that would be asking to break something in the driveline, when you unload the clutch like that its sending a hell of a shock through the drivetrain, and eventually something will break. Usually it ends up being a small, hard to get at, expensive part.

I know you didn't think I was encouraging such action
The only reason I was able to keep my stock D44/12b axles alive under my K5 with a 5.9l Turbo diesel on 35" tires was the fact I was very carefull and didn't loadup my drivetrain and shock it.

5.9 in a k5. must be sweet

Sweet untill my frame started to fall appart.
I am working on a 1 ton frame now to put the engine in and stretch the K5 to fit.:D

The governor have absolutely no effect on the engine if it's being driven by groundspeed (i.e. through the transmission). So yes, you can overspeed (over rev) and engine because of any accidental downshift, like cramming the trans into 1st gear while going 60 mph.

Well maybe in a manual, I tried to downshift a th350 while I was going too fast for 1st and it didn't go in, it acted like neutral, until I slowed down with brakes suddenly it engaged. :D
I never downshifted my manual equiped diesel, but it acted like cruise control going downhill, it wouldn't move past the goverened RPM's.

My SM 465 wouldn't allow me to downshift back into second gear unless i was practically creeping along anyways. I'm guessing the synchro is just way to spooled up to allow that downshift. 4th to third I could see happening, but I envision eating the steering wheel as soon as you let the clutch out.

Lastly, the 6.2 may be governed to 3600...but it's capable of 4500 without destroying itself.

I know, I have seen an article in fourwheeler where the guy said he had the military 6.2 goverened at 4500RPM version. I am guessing they had some that way.
That was 8 years ago that I saw it.

i never know that. could you run that rpm for a while or not?

I am not saying all military engines are, this guy said he had the special one, what I was saying is they did make some like that, which means they could run up that high in the RPM range, for long? I doubt it, it almost feels like the engine is self destructing at 3600RPM, I can only imagine what it sounds like at 4500RPM

All this makes me hurt when I think my perkins is limited at 1800RPM now :o
I am trying to get 2500RPM out of it:haha:

I thought it was the Chevy airplane tugs with the 21:1 geared ZF axles that got the 4200 rpm governor? I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.
