I have a motor that a friend gave me about 6 years ago. i had plans to put it in my s15 but never did. now at first it sat out side with no valve covers or intake, but was wrapped up in plastic for the first 3 years. then that got ripped off somhow so, the only thing been covering it was a piece of plywood
for the last 3 years. now i know the motor will need a rebuild, but sitting in the elements for three years , should i consider it worthless ?

The only way to truly know is to tear into it. See how bad the rust in the cylinder is, and how badly rusted the crank is. It may be that the cylinders can be saved and the crank will need to be replaced. I have seen it go both ways in these situations.

Like lectric80 says, tear it down. What is the motor? Sitting out like that, you will probably find that it is a bare block needing to be rebuilt from the ground up. If it is a stock bore, four bolt main small block, you may want to consider using it. Just check what the cost of buying a junkyard or crate motor would be. Also, some of us just like to build our own engines to the specs we want.
