Question on manual to auto conv.?

I have a '86 K5 with a 350 and the SM465 4 sp tranny. I want to convert it over to a auto with overdrive. How much is involved and what do you guys recommend for a tranny (TH700-R4)? What parts are needed for the covertion?

I use the vehicle for pulling a boat and highway use mainly as it is my vacation vehicle.

I'd keep the 465 just for reliabilty issues. Swapping it out for a 700 R-4 is like geting rid of a D60 in favor of a 10 bolt...with auto hubs

I have a 86 also.. I will trade you straght across. My 700r4 for your 4 speed. You come over. And you can have everthing you need. I can have everthing you need..DEAL?????

I am getting the impression the th700-r4 is not a good tranny. Is there a good overdrive tranny to put in?? Another question is are there any 5-speed trannies that can be used. I would not mind a 5 speed manual.

I am trying to get a good highway tranny. The K5 will go 80mph but it is reving way too high. The 4th gear is like 3rd gear in a 5 speed. I am not sure of my rear end ratio maybe someone can help me with that?

About the auto hubs? I installed manual hubs the autos broke, haha!

I am running 31-10.5-15 now and will be putting on 32-11.5-15 on 15x10s which will help the short 4th gear but would still want to have either a overdrive auto or a 5 speed.

The 700 r4. Isn't really that bad. Mine was rebuilt right before I got the Blazer. It had all the corvette parts put in it. I put on a tranny cooler also. Heat is what kills the 700R4. But for four wheelin. A 4 speed or 5 speed is the way to go...Dan

nv4500 is the way to go on this one baby.

Yeah the NV 4500 is a killer 5 speed tranny...granny low first gear plus overdrive and it's a very strong tranny. For what you'd pay for a decent 700R-4 you might be able to find a NV4500...
Adapting it to your T-case could be the fun part, but no more fun than the 700 R4 swap. Both prospective trannies have a diferent spline count at the output than the SM 465. There are a few guys here running NV 4500's that you may want to ask for more info from. Sparky87K5 is one I can think of offhand. If he doesn't see this post you may want to "private message" him and ask him if he can help get you pointed in the right direction.

Steve Chin from the first gen board put an NV4500 in his K5. He could probably answer most questions you may have. I know it's pretty expensive, around $3K for everything I'm guessing (including tranny). The guys at advance adapters sell everything yo need to do the install. Follow the link.
