There's a 68 International 1-ton 4x4 truck for sale locally here. I'm thinking about getting it for a work/hauling truck. He only wants $800 for it and has a spare 2wd truck for parts. The 1-ton has a flatbed on it already and it's a V8 4-speed. My question is this... He said it has front and rear D60's w/ a big 6-bolt pattern and drum brakes all around. How hard would it be to swap in Chevy (8-lug, disc brakes) D60 parts on the front and convert the rear to 8-lug?

98% sure its a 44 front-could be closed knuckle, i think 67 was last year of closed knuckle so it could be a bastard year. most likley its a 304 but don't be discouraged, those 304s run forever, and from personal expirence better than the 345's. if it has the big bolt pattern the rear is an eaton style and not sure on the front, but im still set on a 44.

Sounds like the best thing to do would be to just swap in 3/4 tone running gear then. I have to wait until after the holidays, but I'll be checking it out in the next couple of weeks. He said it could use some brake work, but it is drivable as it sits.

Yep, definitely wouldn't have a 60 in the front.

It might be a D60, but more likely than that, its a D70 front. You guys don't know much about IH's, do ya?

edit: I'd go to a car parts store and see how available brake parts are for it before purchase. I wouldn't be too surprised if they couldn't get some of the stuff.

Dana 44 or Dana 70 it's irrelevent, it's all small, obsolete stuff. Go look at a Dana 60 shaft from the era...19 spline and small.

Plus closed knuckle and drum brakes.

Upon further consideration it looks like I may have been a bit hasty to say that its not a 60. Even if it is, the aforementioned drum brakes, closed knuckles and small shafts make it undesirable.

Auto Zone has most of the brake parts available that I looked up. It's not a bad price for an operational 4x4. Would a D44/14b-FF running gear be stronger than what's under the truck? (Assuming it's an old-school D60)

I'd be a bit more fearful of other engine parts that might be hard to get.

My Dad sold his '67 Travelall to buy the '73 burb that they still have because it was such a POS. That thing was in the shop more than we drove it!

K-rist, it is hard to believe that I'm 41 sometimes...

I'm used to constantly working on my vehicles to keep them running. If it isn't brakes, it's a tuneup... and so on. The only vehicle I'd drive ANYWHERE is my 87 Mazda 4x4 which doesn't have plates on it right now, lol.
