Utah is bad for rust and granted there are alot of rusty GM vehicles here. But my question is for you NON rust belt inhabitants. Almost EVERY older jeep IHC scout and FJ40 I have looked at around here had SERIOUS rust problems. Yet you can still find low rust GM trucks around. Is it that the GMs are more common or do those 3 have rust issues even where rust isnt as bad as it is here?

Im not brand bashing by any means Im only curious. I have a 54 cj3b high hood LOTS of rust and I have a 66 IHC scout that is totaly full of rust. Funny thing is that little scout (800b model) is just about the heaviest thing I have ever had on my car trailer, but if you kick it anywhere the rust flakes and dust is more than you can scoop up with 2 hands.

Today I went to look at a FJ40 and both front seats was about to fall through the floor. I think these are fairly cool vehicles but every one I look at is rusted BAD. I want to belive that they are just harder to find in better shape because the GM vehicles out number them. What do you guys outside the rust belt see when it comes to FJ40's, scouts, and CJs? Is it because they have more places to trap water and grow rust?

P.S. fords and dodges I dont realy ever look at so i dont know about their rust issues.

A friend here (WV) has an '84 CJ-7 that's completely rust free. Not a spot on it. Another friend bought a Scout (not sure on the year...'76, maybe) from VA that was so rusted out, he wound up selling the radiator and scrapping the truck.

Around here though, damn near anything will rust. Most of the GM and Ford trucks that've been sitting in junkyards for more than a few years only need a strong thunderstorm, and they'll just wash away.

No rust here, I actually knew a guy that would buy scouts here and take them to N.Y. and make some good $$.

Toyota is pretty much the same as GM when it comes to rust, they installed it at the factory. If you ever look at the mid 80's Toy's they had a lip in the bed that was right in the center of the bed sides that always held dirt and stuff and rusted quick. The older Toys were the same way. Don't know about the International's and CJ's though.

I have always wanted to get an FJ40, as I have always loved the look of those, but man are they pricey.

Floorpans are pretty rough, although the only broken spot is in front of the left front nut that the driver's seat bolts to. The area under where the seatbelt mounts to the side of the cab on the driver's side is also completely gone. Top lip of the tailgate at the corners is completely gone.

both of my trucks have minor surface rust on the frame, but after 14 and 25 years, that's expected. no structural issues at all. when i repaired the blazer floor, i cut out a section the size of my fist on each side. that small amount was enough to earn the k5 the title of "rustbucket" with a few of my friends.

but one dufus didn't wax his truck for about 2 years and the texas sun made him regret it. denatured the clearcoat, and once it cracked and flaked off, the paint took no time at all to oxidize and peal. i wax mine about 6 times a year. no problems at all.
