questions for the diesel gods

Oh please, come show me how to get 15-17 mpg with a small block in my Jimmy. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

To get close I'd need to spend a fair chunk of cash...overdrive, port injection, etc etc and I'd still be lucky to see 12-13 going downhill.

Yeah, the 6.2 ain't a B-series Cummins...so what? It moves my 6300 lb one ton Jimmy on 40's just fine and my mileage nearly doubled going from a 350 (that was well tuned) to the 6.2.

As for breaking cranks...how long do you think a small block would go with a bad balancer? How about a Cummins or power stroke?

rene

There is about 5 people who have either broken crankshafts or pistons that I know of. I think they were all less than 200,000 miles. I personally would rather have a small block judging by what I'veseen with 6.2's. An engine grenading is a rather sudden and sh!tty thing. Tybee, I think 15-17 mpg is very do-able with a small block, isn't it? /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

you guys must have jumped in right when I was typing. I do not hate diesels, I'm studying to work on them as a career. I am possibly looking to buy one. Just giving you some friendly sh_t. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif So broken cranks have happened alot then (not to antangonize) do to the bad balancer?

OK Paul,

You got me and a few others. This internet thing doesn't portray body language and tone of voice very well. In person I probably could have figured out you were having a little fun with us over sensitive types... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

In all honesty I don't find my 6.2 to be that much slower than my old 350. Maybe I have low standards...or maybe people in general expect too much from a naturally aspirated diesel.

As for mileage, I know Canmore is pulling down an average of 23-25 in his 83 half ton with a 6.2. There ain't a small block made that'll touch that.

Rene

I guess I've gotten kind of sensitive about the subject too...don't be mouthin' off 'bout my engine /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif!!
When I started looking at my truck, my first thought was, "I'll yank that diesel and put in a big block". Now there is nothing that will get my 6.2 out...except a bigger, better Diesel... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Ahhhh..the sickness

Lets see, I pulled a 427tall deck out of my K30 to install a N/A 6.2 diesel. Went from 8mpg to 15-16.

If you plan on building a 6.2 check the block for cracks near the main bearing bolts and the condition of the balancer and lower pulley(if has the isolator ring). I've had several N/A 6.2s and 2 6.5TDs. Yes, night and day difference in power, even if only 5-7psi in boost. The 6.5TDs pulled about the same as my TBI 454 with WAY better mpg.
Still think the 6.2/6.5 has a place, just not in my suburban /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif.

wanted to say thank you all, the sad prt is I have so much $$$$ in the 396 but it will really agrivate me to stall out on some fricking hill all day. I also might look into bbc tbi setups I dont know yet /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Hey all,
haven't been around much lately, but I'll let you in on the news...
Busted the Block in my 6.2L about 2 weeks ago, with all the work and all around here getting ready to deploy, haven't seen too much of the diesel and hadn't been asking too much about the 6.2... I must say one thing about the 6.2, it's a great engine for gas milage and so on, but compared to a good gaser, my Diesel is a dog! It's probably wore the heck out, I know. But the deal is that I borrowed a friends tahoe with a 350 in it and now that I "patched" the block and it's on the road again, it sure does go slow! I love her, but for pure unaddulterated power, the 6.2 is lacking...
2nd) I spent the last 2 weeks looking around at prices on rebuilding it.... HOLLY CRAP! It's going to cost me about $1500 to rebuild this thing... That's with my military connections.... So, it's come down to this.......

On my return from the Southeast region of Iraq, I will be yanking the cracked/Wore-out 6.2 and be droping the 5.9L cummins I was asking so much about a month or so ago! It's going to cost me a bit more, but I can't justify putting $1500 towards an engine that is so slugish....

In case anyone wnats to know, JB Weld works wonders!!!!!!! It should hold while the wife drives her while I'm away, if not, She has the Weekend Warrior(which is her's)! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

ANOTHER 6.2 goes down? Geez, I cant believe that seeing as its the greatest engine ever made /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif.

Chill out man, The guy is just trying to get under your skin!

The block cracking was my own fault, had nothing to do with the engine itself, Again I told you it was a great engine and I can't emagine getting that kind of milage in a gaser!!!!!!! I had a coolant leak a while back and I traced it down to the expansion tank and a faulty radiator cap after a few months of always having to refill the radiator of water after two days.... Well needless to say, when I finally changed the cap and tank, I filled it with water for the umpteenth time to see if the leak was gone and even though I noticed that I wasn't loosing coolant anymore, I failed to drain the system and refill with antifreeze.... Well, down here in TX, we really don't worry about it freexing much and this year it hit hard, after it was 20 degrees for four days straight(Cause the state closes when it freezes), I went out to my truck to go to a friends house and the radiator, engine and all was frozen solid! The engine needless to say,CRANKED RIGHT UP!!!!!! hit the glowplugs for about 10 seconds and it was like it was middle of summer!!!! I melted all three belts instantaniously and when I got to my friends house a block away, the ice started melting and the water started coming down from the side of the engine.... At first I thought it was a freeze plug, but needless to say, they're still sealed just fine.... /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I had a 6 inch crack right above the starter and until I pulled the starter, there was no way to tell... I cleaned the spot with a die grinder and alot of brake clean, made a batch of JB weld up and slapped it on, 24 hours later, filled the coolant up and cranked her over again! Now I have three new belts and she runs just like she used too.... She's wore out, but she's the most reliable engine I've ever owned! The plan is to keep the drivetrain I've got and rebuild the engine, buy a gutted Heep and put the diesel and 700 with the 208 in it with some 3:08 gears and 31" tires! My dad needs a fuel saver for around town and I know this would really make him happy... As for me, I'm going for the Cummins... I've already budgeted it and with about $5000 I should be able to easily get a used cummins and a new nv4500 and mate it to my spare 32 spline 205... Some day Imight throw in a doubler for heavy hauls, but before I adapt the engine and tranny, I'm going to tube the frame for extra strength... Eventually I want to boost the cummins and put a goosneck in the blazer, maybe some dually flares and rear axle, still kicken that idea around! Saw a dually burban the other day, but I think the short wheelbase with the goosneck would be awsome! A lot of people frown upon the idea of a goosneck blazer, but as long as the weight is distributed above or slightly forward of the rear axle, physics shows that the traction of the short wheelbase truck to the longwheelbase truck would be no different! Anyway, like I said, I love the 6.2, but the cost of rebuilding it just seems like I should upgrade! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Tyler...is the 6.2 bashing really necessary? We all know how great the Cummins is and how pathetic the 6.2 is/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif, maybe it's just time to give it a rest OK?

Rene

You know I'm just curious here, for a guy that hates 6.2L diesels so much............ AND works at a Caterpiller plant........ AND Owns a diesel Blazer WITH a 6.2......... It's a miracle that you still drive that thing! Why havn't you dropped a Cat in the Blazer yet? IF, they're so astrinomically(SP) the worst piece of crap???????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

The few times I went off-roading with fellow CK5ers while I lived in Colorado I never had a problem in the steep twisties. I also seemed to run a little better in the higher altitudes than some of the gassers, although you smoke like a mother at 12,000 feet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My K5 doesn't leave the pavement much these days. Not a bad thing in my eyes, because I get 25-30mpg on the highway these days with my diesel.

I agree with that 100%.

Another cool thing with owning a diesel K5 is the comments you WILL get while fueling up. Every where I've been, from Colorado to Chicago, IL, people stop and ask questions more often than not when I go fill up.

"Did you swap that engine?"

"What kind of mileage do you get... HUH?! That's better than what this car gets!"

"How many miles on 'er?"

"I'll bet that's fun off-road!"

I love my diesel K5.

I get 25-27mpg normally, with a high of 30mpg the last time I cruised from Colorado to Indiana.

No, there isn't an SBC out there that'll touch that. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

THat's the MPG that I got before I put 33s on it and 4:10 gears! I kind of miss thoose 31s and 3:73! Gain a little lose a little!

Yeah, I can't complain about the mileage. I drive 160 miles to work and back ever day, so that's 800 miles a week, and I can almost do it on one tank if I don't get caught in stop-n-go traffic too much.
