I am putting together the list of parts to re-gear my FF 14-Bolt diff. I have decided to go with a Yukon Grizzly locker, in order to replace my G80 Gov Lock. The reason I chose the Yukon Grizzly locker is because they are about $25 cheaper than an Eaton Detroit locker, and according to experts they are identical to each other.

I have read that positraction/limited slip units are not recommended for off-roading with tires bigger than 35". The tires I have right now are 36", and I am going to a set of 37" tires next. This means that I have to live with a full locker unit, in order to run tires bigger than 35".

I need to get an open carrier for my FF 14-Bolt diff. Motive gear has one for about $175. Yukon has one that is a little over $400. I want to go with 5:13 gears, and both Yukon and Motive Gear offer a 14-Bolt 4:56-UP open carriers. Is there that much difference in strength and quality between the $400 Yukon open carrier and the lower price $175 Motive Gear carrier?

My truck is a 1991 Crew Cab, and I am only going to be doing light off-roading with this truck

i use to run 38" swampers and 4.10 gears with a built 400 sbc in mud / snow / d.d. and all around truck and never once had a problem with the good working gov-loc i had in there . at 1 point i swapped in a detroit and in the end i swapped it back out as it sucked on snow covered city roads and also caused me more problems off road with the rear wanting to always come around .

if you want to go locker get thick cut gears for the 14ff rear and use a super common 4.10-down carrier from some used source and save cash .

One reason I want to replace the original Gov Loc on my old crew cab is because it has about 300,000 miles on it. It does seem to still work just fine, but those things are known for the fly weight levers on them going bad eventually. With a new locker from Yukon or Eaton I know I will be good to go for many years to come no matter what size tire or off road situation I get into. I also want better gears that are suited for the larger tires I have. With the stock 4:10 gears, 7000 pounds worth of Crew Cab, and my 36" tires my truck is too much of a slug from a dead stop at a red light.

i know the gear swap info for you .

its up to you just was giving my feedback . and the 14ff gov-loc is not built near as trashy on the fly weight side as 10/12 bolt units were .

i was saying the 5.13 for the 4.56 up carrier in the rear will coast you a LOT more money over getting a used 4.10 carrier and thick cut gears .

good luck with the swap .

Do you think a factory GM open carrier is a better quality carrier than the lower priced Motive Gear one for $175?

i might have one here . and there the same up to 2010 if i recall in the newer trucks non 8.1 or d-max

I think that all FF 14-Bolt diffs where mostly the same from 1973 to 2001 (except for some different hubs and axle lengths). After 2001 GM went from SAE wheel stud pattern to a Metric wheel stud pattern, which caused a change in the axle flange. I do not know about the internal carriers. If you happen to have one let me know. There is no hurry though.

inside gut the same for a majority of it .

look up the part #'s and verify the same .

i have had a few open over the years and scrapped a few they look the same inside .

After shopping around I have found that the 4:56-up carriers are only about $15 to $20 more than the 4:10-down carriers. If I bought the Yukon carrier that would definitely be more expensive than the stock one or Motive Gear one. There is a couple of used stock ones on e-bay going for about $200.

but what is the price split on the gear set ? thats were the big value comes in .

and toss up a parts wanted ad here for a open carrier .

I found a place that has a complete standard thickness 4:56 gear change, and bearing install set for a Dana-60/Corp 14-Bolt combo for $600 even, which includes free shipping. These gears are for 4:56-up corporate 14-Bolt carrier, and a Dana-60 4:10-up carrier.

As long as the carrier in my Dana-60 is good, I may go with a thick gear set for that because it most likely came stock with a 4:10-down carrier. But, because my Corp 14-Bolt has a G80 Gov Loc, if I want a true locker I have to get an open carrier for it.

I just did a quick search, and the price of gears (including thick gears) has really gone up. Last set i bought for 14b was $175. But that was 15yrs ago.

Premium gear sets from a company like Richmond or Yukon can be pricey, but the gears set I want to buy are a second tear set like Motive, Elite, or U.S. Standard Gear that are good enough for average street use are still in the $175 dollar range you mentioned.

Vendors on pirate take PMs and can seriously sell near wholesale because it's not advertised.
Amazon is like 20 bucks over pirate vendors.
They might be able to put you together a good package deal from one source.

Thanks. I will give that a try. Do you have to be a member at Pirate for that? I have never created an account for that web site.
