what exactly is the ring gear assembly? is it like a spool ?

Uhm, I think, just the ring gear. It's not like these used a spacer

Ring gear, no assembly. But a ring gear has a mated pinion gear to go with it. Don't interchange them. The carrier could be called an assembly as it has a few spider gears/clutches/shafts...depending on type. The ring gear bolts to the carrier, the carrier bolts into the differential axle housing.

ok i know that there is an open or limited slip. is the 14 bolt anything like that? the housing is big and knarly looking
