So i went ahead and started rebuilding the thing myself and so far seems pretty straight forward till now!

I have it almost all reassembled and the reverse input drum is giving me grief. Both my manuals say belleville plat in first with small cone side down. Then flat steel, friction, steel, friction, steel, friction steel, friction backing plate!

With this there is no clearance or maybe .01 and the steels and friction i replaced seem to be the same size. I tried just replacing the frictions (steels seemed to have slight discrepancy in thickness) but still no change in clearance.

I saw someone recommend on another sight to take the bottom steel out (the one against the belleville plate) but i wanted to know what your guys opinions are. that would give me about a .075 clearance and that is max clearance for 87 and up

Also it says to test for clearance by pushing down on th pack with 20lb of force and taking the measurement but when i push on it even with more force there is absolutely no movement???? Is the small cone end really supposed to go down? it seems counter intuitive to me?

Obviously, you just follow your notes from disassembly :D

I'm not sure about about that specific step, other than the manuals are generally correct, except when you change things, like the number of frictions, etc. or install mods/upgrades. Then you have to read between the lines of which instructions apply at which step.

Be open minded and willing to backtrack. It's possible something else isn't seated correctly further down and you need to pull stuff out to fix a problem deeper in the stack. It happened to me once.

Ya i agree that is why it is getting to me so much. I didn't note the clearances before i disassembled becuase i figured they would be off due to wear. every thing has been spot on and i have assembeld and reasemble the thing a number of times to check.

Im going to give it another shot today but im almost positive it has something to do with the reverse drum as that is the only clearance i can't get right and the trouble shooting even says to check that if end play is off. I install it all and no end play.

any one know what happens if your clearance is to tight or to loose? I was told if it was to loose it would slip more?

It really boils down to how i get proper clearance for the reverse drum my clutches are .07 and my steels are .075 i believe? i will check and post later along with bell plat and top plate

thanks for the help

well i pulled it all apart once again taking extreme care to match and check everything all the way up to the output shaft retaining ring so i know im spot on to that point and everything looks good.

I even reinstalled and assembled everything in the input housing and double checked everything there so i know that's good as well.

The reverse drum is still giving me grief tho and it gets worse! I reinstalled the original part for it just like it came out of the tranny originally and there is less than .02" clearance. This only makes me wonder if i should just reinstall it that way? I mean it lasted 170xxx like that before?

I am also currently looking to find a different thickness back plate mine is currently .269-.270 and that is what the manual recommends to fix the problem

Be sure you are using the correct frictions and that the piston is fully seated in the drum. The spring plate at the bottom will leave marks on the inner spline to show you how it was in the drum originally, should go in with the dished portion facing up. 1987 and later used a thinner friction plate, if you have the early friction plates clearence will be too tight for sure.

Well everything is the same between the frictions and steels with in .001" most likely due to wear. Even the original frictions and steels give me little to no clearance.

I went ahead and ordered a new pressure plate as that is what the manual says to do, however it obviously came out of the trans with little to no clearance so it shouldn't be an issue but i did loose 2-4 so im guessing that could be why since i have seen no other alarming signs of failing. The only problem with that theory is then the frictions and steels should be burnt up and they don't look it.

It could also have been the Governor but i haven't checked that yet.

I just figured better to put it exactly how the manual says at this point. but thanks for all the help.

Something is not kosher, you should have quite a bit more clearence than this, hope you will discover the problem and correct it before you put the trans back in the truck. If you lost second and 4th then the band was probably smoked. Pay close attention to that reverse drum since the band rides on it and it warps easily. If in doubt of the band surface replace the drum and start over, make sure it is the 87 and later style.
