Quick a/c question....

Can I fix an evaporator or is it better being replaced? Also, when I fix/replace it, do I have to get the whole thing reworked in order for it to cool properly and not tear up the compressor?
And just where the hell is the evaporator (I was told that's what was wrong with the a/c)?????? I know just about nothing about a/c!

Without gettng too technical, the evaporator is the coil that the fan (inside the truck) blows air across. This is how you get cool air in the cab. You would be better replacing it. Not something you want to do twice. It is located in the engine compartment and kind of inside the truck. Just trace the refrigerant lines to where they go into the firewall. It is prob. behind a cover in the engine compartment.
You should make sure you have the system vacummed down and recharged after replacement.

When i did my A/C this past month i had to go through the whole system. My evaporator was cut at the line so i also needed a new one. So i went to the junk yard and found several still in the box on the firewall so it was protected not just laying in the dirt;(if you get one fromt he junkyard look at the coils because if they look wet with dirt stuck to them it has a leak and you don't want that) I installed it and works fine, i cleaned it up with coil cleaner or degreaser and then compressed air and blew nitrogen through (my dads an A/C guy so i had all the stuff available to me, compressed air should work also) The evaporator is located in the black box on the firewall near your blower motor and the heater hoses.

Also you should replace the accumulator / receiver dryer and orifice tube because there is a good chance
its full of junk and will help flow better.

Most GM evaporators can't be repaired, so you'll have to get a new one. After replacing it, I'd put in the R134A conversion, so you won't have to mortgage the farm to get it charged again.

If you use air to blow it out, make sure there's a dryer/oil trap in the line.

Lara, I'll send you the A/C evaporator unit off of Stampy. I'm not going to run A/C. I'm sure its in good shape. I'll just send the whole heater/A/C box...

AFAIK, you can just bolt this one up and have the system recharged.
As for $ I'll ship it first and let you know...if the shipping isn't too much just forget about it! Now that I've actually been in the Ft. Worth and Dallas area I know for a fact you need the AC more than I do!

I know nothing about a/c allthough since my a/c doesn't work I would like to learn . What is this R134a conversion your talking about? Cheaper recharge? And finally where would i get it, how do you do it, how much does it cost, and should i do it or have it done?

I stopped at a rest stop just to change clothes near Ft. Worth...I could have wrung out my shirt it was so humid and hot!

As for extremes, I also had snow going over the pass in Wyoming...
