What is the difference between:

And this:

Look close:thinking:

My smog sticker under the hood calls for ORC, which is a 3 way catalytic converter. Being an 85, it's not OBDII. However, Summit wont sell me the cat in the second link. According to what is typed everywhere, this cat is a 3 way pre-OBDII cat, ORC. I guess an extra 120 bucks is what I pay for being in CA. Might just buy the cheaper off EBay. Is there anything written on the cat that says CA exempt? This is bullsh.!t
I smell smoke being blown up.....:smokin2:

Because of the law that passed a couple years ago ALL catalytic convertors sold in CALIFORNIA must be embossed with the part number, direction of flow arrow, manufacter date, and CARB EO number. Also keep in mind that you MUST run a catalytic convertor that is the same size exhaust pipe that the truck originally came with. I'm pretty sure that an 85 DID NOT come with a 3" exhaust.

What year did they start with the 3" single into a 3" cat and dual 2.25" tailpipes Scott?

I'm pretty sure the first year of TBI (1987) was when GM went to the 3" exhaust. I have never seen a blazer with dual pipes factory so i have no idea about that. I can tell you that my 1989 blazer came factory with a single 3" exhaust the whole way.

I wish you were my neighbor. Is there anything you don't know?

There is alot I don't know but when it comes to vehicles I do know ALOT. That comes from 32 years of working on them and also knowing alot of friends in the business as well that keeps me educated on some of the different smog laws and such.

wow, well that blows
So I have to pay 120 extra for the stamping of the cat
and I'm stuck with 2.5"?

it just doesn't make any sense
ORC is a 3 way cat pre-OBDII
93509 is such a cat
my stock s10 obd2 cat doesn't say anything on it

the 3" rule is silly, might be for proper heating of the cat, but it's still silly.
frick, is this the price I pay for having no rust? fuking blows, how can CA be in debt when every company making parts has to pay extra for the states seal of approval. Oh and if you're a painter, new laws are past to make you pay 500 bucks to take a test on how to remove lead paint, if you don't have one and get caught there are fines, if you have one and are found removing lead paint improperly, there are fines.

Not only are you stuck with 2.5 you also have to place the cat in the same location as stock + or - six inches. Yep, that is specified in the new law.

The reasoning is location and size impact how fast/if the cat will actually get hot enough to work efficiently.

Grumble, don't even get me started on this mess....

By the way, if you can install yourself (have welder), go to www.rockauto.com

Even if they say they wont, they will reach your door. But you did not hear that from me.

As true as that might be if the person who smogs the vehicle checks the CAT and it IS NOT a California approved CAT he is "supposed" to fail you instantly and turn you into the BAR.

How would they prove you bought it after the law was passed?

Indeed, my point exactly. CA is counting on mechanics not installing them and shops not selling them to customers. Installed before Jan 1 2009 you are grandfathered in.

I am not a big fan of bending laws and you can see that by looking at my past posts. In fact I am a big proponent of doing legal engine swaps here in California and have done it successfully several times with the California smog referee stickers to prove it. But this law has me bent.

I am in fact a bender of this law because i CHOSE to install a set of cats on my 73 blazer. My truck is completely stock with the exception of added cats. I don't even NEED to smog my truck (pre 75). I chose to do this because I really don't like the smell of a non cated vehicle. But in this case, I am a law breaker. My truck burns WAY cleaner and I feel I am actually one upping the "spirit of the law" but because of this law....because there is no "approved application" for a 73 blazer...grumble.

I will say this, considering I brought the topic up. I am all for smog laws, I see no problem having a cat on, or an air pump. I removed my pre-cat on my s10, that's the only "bad" thing I've done.
The blazer will have a cat, air pump, and egr. It wont have the heat riser, cause it's broken and I'm not paying for a new one. It will be in place but gutted.
I like the idea of throwing a cat on the '73, cootos. CA is now requiring post '06 diesels to smog. Its only a visual pretty much, but a lot of ppl are screwed. I think it's their own fault for taking everything off and driving around with a cloud of smoke.

When did the "only 2.5" thing start?

It is not really a 2.5 inch restriction it is an "approved application" thing. as of Jan1 2009 when replacing the cat you must use the "application approved" cat. What that means is you end up having to use the size cat that was installed on the truck or car to begin with. If it was a honda civic you might have to use the 1.75 inch cat (if that is what it came with). If you had a V10 in an Expedition you would use the 3 inch cat (if that is what it came with from the factory. The idea is you cant install a bigger cat than a vehicle came with. having a bigger cat could cause the cat to run cooler and end up never firing off.
