I read somewhere doing a search that a detroit locker IS the carrier? is that true? to swap out to higher (numerically) gears in an open diff with a series 3 carrier, all i'd need to do is get a detroit and the gears, no 4 series carrier?

thx for any clarification anyone can offer

Depends on what axle you are talking about.?.?

Thanks 1979jimmy350.

Forgot to mention this was a Dana70HD. that explains why a detroit is so darn expensive compared to a 14boltFF.

good news to hear!! :)

That is one of the reasons the FF 14 bolt is so damn sweet. The stock carrier is practically bulletproof and can sustain a "lunchbox" style locker no problem. Most carriers are cast iron/steel and can be a weak link which is why most detroit lockers include all parts of the carrier.
