Ok guys I'm trying to decide on either buying a 79 3/4 ton 10blt(28 spline) allready with 8lugs or convert my 90 10blt(30 spline) to 8 lug. The thing is the 14blt allready has 4.10s and so does the matching front out of the 79. My 10blt has 3.73's so id have to switch gears as well. What would you guys do??? Thanks alot

That was kinda confusing, but if you said you are considering buying a 14 bolt, that is the best option. No way I would pay $ to BUY a 10 bolt. Save and get a 14 bolt/dana 60.

:surepal: he's talking about putting a couple hundred into a 10bolt front not 600-1000 in a D60 that might need another couple hundred in it to clean it up and regear

I'd clean up the 79 4.10 axle and put it under unless you want to change the gears over to the 30spline carrier and try setting them up in the new housing... From other posts I dont think anyone has a cut and dry answer on if 30 spline is stronger than 28... I say use the 79, spend a couple bucks to clean it up.
Sell the 30 spline parts or stuff them in the garage as backups.

Will the 30 spline spiders fit in the other carrier? That would be easy enough to do if a person wanted to upgrade.

run the 28 spline, parts are easier to find for it. so when you do break it it will save you alot of trouble locating parts.

I'm sorry it was so confusing. What I ment to say is I allready have a 10blt 6 lug 30 spline under my k5. The guy I bought the 14blt from still has a 10blt(the matching axle to the 14). Rather then spend 400-500 on switching my 10blt to 8 lug should I just buy that one for like 75-100? Is the 30 spline 10blt any stronger then the 3/4ton 28 spline? thats all I really needed to know.

For that little money , buy the matching ratio 10 bolt front so all your gears and wheels are the same . 28 spline lockers and spares are readily available . Part the 30 spline axle out since 30 spline spares are harder to comeby :D

If it was me I would but the matching 10 bolt from him. Now you have 2 10 bolts to make one good axle. And now ft and rear have same gear ratio.

What years were 30 spline and what years were 28 spline?

I'm about to have to go thru my front 10b as it makes some really cool noises that sound like $$$$ If the spiders and sides are toast it gets a lunchbox locker.

I was going off of this

clicky

But yeah I'm going to buy the axle if the guy will return my call.

thanks guys :waytogo:

28 spline through 1988 , and outside of any possible leftovers they were 30 spline from 1989 on :k5: :k5:

Assuming it's in good shape and no more than maybe $150, I would just buy the '79 10-bolt and be done with it. I would cost at least that much for gears (assuming you could set them up yourself) plus you would still need the 8-lug parts.

Speaking of 8-lug parts, I bought everything I needed for the conversion for $50 out of a junkyard.

The inner 30-spline shafts still have a taper groove cut in them that's about the same size as the 28-spline shafts, so I doubt they are really any stronger. And no, you cannot fit a 30-spline shaft into a 28-spline carrier. From my understanding you would have to machine the carrier and install the 30-spline side gears before you could install the 30-spline shafts.

Just get the matching 10b and run that. There really doesnt seem to be any measurable strength increase with the 30spline, and parts are a lot harder to come by. Just dont pay to much for the 10b.
