When I turn the slider for the Heat and/or A/C (which now isn't working either) to off, hot air continues to come out of the vents by the trans hump (I think that's the heat vents). I can't get it to stop.

The slider works well to redirect air to the vents, bilevel, or defrost it just doesn't stop when it's in the off position. Fan works fine...

Of course I've had other cars do the same, but not this bad. Plus it's always warm. In fact, even when in vent and on the cool setting, I'm getting air that is much hotter than outside air.

Something stuck somewhere? Where do I start looking?

Thanks,
John

There are vent doors that are vacuum operated and my guess is you have a bad vacuum hose somewhere not allowing the door to function properly.

The rubber seals inside the HVAC system dry out with age and don't seal as well as when they were new. :(

The easiest fix is to install a valve in one of the heater hoses. Shut it off in the summer and you'll get cooler air through the vents. Open it in the winter when you want to use the heat.

Check this out.

On the passenger side of the hump, there's a cover on the heater box. Remove that cover, you'll see a little white nylon retainer with a pin going through it and the actuator rod. Make sure that retainer is not broken. If it is replace it with part # 3018715 from the dealer. When you're replacing the pin, it's easier to squeeze it through with pliers into something soft like a paint stick.
