Is is better to tap the box vs going with the cap option? I had decided to do the caps so I could simply swap caps when I rear up a box.

Any input?

That exact thing had never occurred to me before this last trip to BB, I overheard Brandon Watson (miniwally) discussing that exact topic. Seems he thinks tapping through the covers yields lower pressure and less power.

It doesn't matter if you use the end cap and tap the top cover versus tapping the box itself directly. The only advantage to using the caps is that you can easily swap caps onto another box and keep going. The down side to the top cover being tapped is that it is aluminum and not very thick and have been known to blow apart on some people. As far as pressure, it is all the same no matter what you do as it still comes from the same place.

I have the cap... but i did not install it.. my friends became really good at tapping the boxes and i think its a better way. My friend did not have good luck w/ the cap in the past cuz the clips can be a pain to deal with and popped out and sometimes dont fit correctly into the box. I have the JKW cap never used ill sell real cheap tho if you wanna go that route! I've been happy w/ the tapping of the box tho! really confident in it holding.

I busted a cap tuesday night "haha sounds gangster"

anyways at the time I set mine up I found out that the current offering for caps was different than the box's found on the hd's. Then recently found out jkw does sell them now.

I was told you use the left over fluid and it causes a lag/dead spot

I know that makes no sense so I will see if i can get it explained better.

I got a JW cap and tapped the top, sometimes when you tap the box your tires will hit the box where it is tapped and they braek off, which will be your situation Shawn

I think DIY is making a cap now :dunno:

My steering box is located inside the frame...

I decided to tap the caps on mine. I had previously tapped a box but never used the hydro-assist as I had gotten ahold of a van box that was reversed and thus couldn't use it.

I have been running this setup for years and yet to have any issues (knock on wood). It's the stock top cap and end cap. A couple of professional welders/fabricators looked at the stock end cap caused I had asked about welding more material on it first, but they all said it was plenty thick enough (I'll look at my spare but probably 3/8" thick). I did JB Weld a large fender washer onto the cap before drilling and tapping though.

It's easier to drill and tap the caps versus doing the box, plus you don't have to either disassemble the box to clean it our just hope you get all of the shavings out of it.

Here I will xplain it it

Get drill with bit

Take cap off

Dont drop selector shaft

drill hole in thick part

tap hole for threads that work

reinstall cap

your done

call me or bring it over got the stuff here to do it if you need too Matt
