Quick muffler question

Probably a stupid question:

I know running rich will kill a cat converter early, but will it do any harm to a muffler? I have a new flowmaster 50 series I need to put on but I don't want to if it'll cause it to wear out prematurely. I don't know when I'll have the running rich problem fixed but I have to get the annoying exhaust rumble fixed soon. Can't stand the headaches on long drives anymore.

all a rich condition will do is blacken the inside of the muffler. no harm done

Not sure how they do it, but i have seen several mufflers blown apart, like there was an internal expolsion, pop, all the seams were broke apart.

i had friends do that on purpose way back in the day. Kill the engine at 60 mph or so, then key back to run a second or so later. That one second of spinning 2000+ rpm but not running brought a bunch of raw fuel into the exhaust...then key on, engines re-lights and "BOOM" out the exhaust. Get carried away and it blows the muffler apart like a banana that's been stepped on.

I blew my brand new 50 series running rich. If you want some good 40 series flowmasters to get you by I have a whole pile of good ones you can pick through,couple of good running q-jets too.

It shouldn't hurt your muffler at all. It's just a canister with some baffles/corners. Nothing in there really.

But a backfire can blow it apart.

It's not running rich enough to backfire or even smoke. Just enough to stink and burn the eyes . I don't think I'll have a problem then. Thanks all!
