Got a guy selling a 5 speed out of a 1990 half ton 2wd pickup. I had kind of shelved the NV4500 idea, but this guy is asking $500!!

I'm not sure if NV4500's were around then. Were they? Is there an easy way to ID it to the layman (him, over the phone) when its still in the rig? Is there any problem with it being a 2wd, or is it one of those "have to get the 4wd output shaft" deals?

Tranny codes in the glove box are MM5 and MG5. Neither of which I can find online...

Thanks for your quick responses!!

Ok, that code is apparently for the NV3500, which I *don't* want (finally found it) He mnetioned it had been replaced by a guy that was "hard on the truck" so maybe I can get lucky here...all the previous questions still apply though!

I had a 88 1/2 ton GMC with the 5 speed. It was the Getrag 5 speed and completely useless for our application. It can be identified (or eliminated) by the fact the bellhousing is integral. It is a toploader and looks like an automatic.

Hope that helps some.

Yeah, I called him back, and it has a non "granny" 1st gear. Guess thats a dead giveaway. : ) Thanks!

Well they do shift very smoothly, but they are noisy and prolly not very strong. For a 2wd truck they are pretty good.

If you find a NV4500 for cheap get one for me too...

the little 5 speeds used from 88-92 are junk look for the transmission and belhousing are 1 piece the 1 you want is cast iron detaches from belhousing and is huge.also it has a pto cover on the side!
