quick question - removing brake rotors

hey im trying to get my rotors turned because they SUCK... can anyone point me to a thread or tell me in detail how to get these things off? i have a 3/4 ton 87 suburban with manual hubs and if i take it to a shop its gonna be about $80 bucks :mad: for them to take them off etc etc. if i take them off and go to kragens its $20 bucks. not bad! so can someone help me out with this? thanks!
 
ill try and explain this best i could
1. remove manual hubs
2. remove caliper.
3. remove 1st lockring, then spacer, then 2nd ring.
4. remove disc/hub
5. beat/press out studs. the disc and hub will now be seperated

for step 1. remove outer part. (typically the allen heads)

next remove c-clip that is on the outer part of the hub,
if equiped remove c-clip on axle shaft end
remove inner hub.

you wil need a hub socket for removing the lockrings.
if its a 1/2 or 3/4 ton you need htis

yeah its been getting pretty sketchy. sometimes it stops alright and sometimes it takes like 5 times as long as it normally should to stop. gotta fix it soon because i dont want my boost to be working like way more than it should. did you remove the rotors and do it yourself too?
 
i actually havent done the rotors on MY axle, but i helped do my buddies waggoneer, witha 44 and we turned the calipers then noticed that on 1 of them it was WAY TO F*cked up so he ended up just buying a new pair.
 
Brakes, brakes...Isn't that what the back bumper of the car in front of you is for??? :haha: :haha: :haha: Yeah they are kinda a pain, but you basically have to disassemble the entire hub. It is worth it to get fresh grease on all the bearings, and check the bearings for wear.
 
don't take the rotor off of the hub!
the machine is made to square the rotor to the hub which the collars of the machine ride where your wheel bearings are. I know where I worked if you brought in the rotor without the hub we'd either turn you away or tell ya that we could make em flat but not true.
 
okay so I called around and the cheapest I could find was $60 bucks to take them off of my truck and turn them on a lathe. Do the bearings need to be packed and the seals and all that stuff like that if they take the rotors off? My bearings are fine, but if the rotors come off do they need to be re packed cause i dont think this place will do that

You should always repack the bearings before you put them back on.

It takes me about 1/2 hour to remove the rotors from my Dana 60 and about 1 hour to put them back on with torquing and everything. Why do you need to pay someone to take them off again? Are you sure you don't need new rotors?

The rotors are cheap enough I would just replace the rotor and not even bother with taking them to a shop.

Oh and as was said pull the hub and rotor assembly and take the whole thing to the shop for turning if that is what you are gonna do. My local guy turned my 60 rotors no problem in about 30 min for both.

thats what I do when the rotors warp. after you cut them they will be much easier to warp the second time. Go get 2 new rotors and save the time and effort of having them cut.
