Soo I am eventually going to put a 6.2 I got from a friend into my Bessie and replace her 350 tbi. I was wondering though, I have a damn fine custom exhaust including a set of stainless, coated, headers. Am I going to luck out with the usual great Chevy interchangeability or am I gonna have to spring for new exhaust for the oil burner? :doah:Thanks doods...

unless your 350 happens to have SB2 heads on it, no dice. The 6.2L has SB2/BBC/LS1 style evenly spaced exhaust ports. It also depends on if youre running a turbo or not. Although, You could run a procharger instead of the turbo, and then have a set of headers made to match the 6.2 up to the rest of the exhaust system. dunno how much a local shop would charge for a completely custom made set of headers though.

EDIT - and no, i am not saying SB2 BBC and LS1 headers are interchangeable, im saying standard SBC is [0 00 0], 6.2 SB2 BBC and LS1 all have even ports [0 0 0 0 ]. even though the manifolds dont all interchange.

Man! Bummer! Oh well I guess....At least I can use the rest of the exhaust then. I guess what I'd like to then if ir will work is this: Ok the 6.2 is N/A and is out of a suburban. So I think i'd like to just take the manifolds that were on the burbo for now and put them in with my existing exhaust. At a point later when I can afford it, I'd like to add in the Banks turbo kit for it. I am guessing the kit comes with the correct headers or manifolds? Anyone? Or at least I hope you can order them from banks yeah?

It depends on your exhaust setup. If youre currently running true duals youll need to have a muffler shop fab up a Y pipe with a single pipe coming from the turbo outlet and splitting to meet up with the two existing exhaust pipes and mufflers.

If youre running a single exhaust that runs down the passenger side it shouldnt be too hard to get em to meet up.

there is a crossover pipe for the turbo setup that goes from driver side to passenger side, both empty into the turbo, and the single outlet goes back.

I believe the full banks sidewinder setup includes a full exhaust system.

Thanks again! Oh hey one more thing diesel guys, the motor is coming out of a 1986 suburban. Now does that year have the improved heads on it that are good for +30hp or so? Does it have a serpentine set up? And is it a one piece rear main seal most importantly?

now youre hitting the detailed stuff im a bit fuzzy on, wrench, trustyK5, and a few others are guru's at this stuff. but here's my swing at it.

improved heads - were military items i belive. difference was in the pre-combustion chamber cups.

serp setup - cant remember when GM started that, my military rig has v-belts, but thats not really relivant to your civi application.

one piece rear main seal - i think happened in the early 90's but im sure someone will correct me on this.

The difference is in the precups, the intake and the injection pump. The HD version of the engine is usually found in 3/4 tons and 1 tons. Best way to tell if you have one is to take a look at the intake and see if it has EGR or not. If it doesn't, then it is likely the HD J code engine, if it does have an EGR canister, then it is likely the light duty C code engine.

I doubt that engine will have a serpentine setup on it unless it was swapped in. Not totally sure on the main seal however. I know in gassers they switched to single piece in 86.
