Quick th400 np205 question

If you can tear the t-case apart yourself and put it back together correctly and have someone who can machine the input bearing hole to the correct size and you can find a 32 short input shaft cheap enough then go for it.

I'm going to bet that buying the correct t-case then swapping the fixed rear yoke is going to be cheaper for you in the long run though.

Alright, ive got a couple of pick-n-pulls around my area. Maybe I should just go there and try to find what I am looking for. Is there any 4x4s that came with the np205 behind a th400 and had a flanged front and a fixed yoke rear? If so what do I need to start looking for? Or do you think I should offer him $400 for the set up he has got? I don't think he is going to move on his price. If I had hair I would be pulling it out at this point! Lol...Thanks for all of the help so far. Also the 205 I have with the 10 spline input has a fixed yoke rear output. Can I just swamp them over to the 205 this guy has? How hard is it? It looks to me like the whole rear output just unbolts. Can I unbolt them and just swap them out?

The 30 spline front output started in 1976 or 1977 roughly and had a fixed rear output up until 1979 then in 1980 they were rear slip yoke. The front output is easy to swap also and no case machining is required so i wouldn't worry about what the front spline count is.

Yes you can swap over the rear fixed part of your existing 205. It isn't that hard to do.

I have a '82 1 ton crew cab that came with a 454 th400 205 that has a fixed rear output and 2 piece rear driveshaft. My uncle owned this truck since it was 2 or 3 years old so I am pretty sure it is stock.
I also have a '88 1 ton cab and chassis with 350 sm465 205 combo with a fixed rear output and a 2 piece rear driveshaft. I don't know the history of this truck so it may not be stock.

Well I just realized somthing today! The th400/203 combo I have doesn't have an adaptor! The crossmember bolts to the tranny itself as does the 203. Does this mean the 205 I found with an adaptor won't work? I haven't gone to look at it yet because it is over an hour drive. The bolt pattern on the back of the tranny has 7 holes. See below!

I'm pretty sure you're missing count on the bolt holes and that there are actually 8 holes and not 7 and that would be the adapter. 4X4 trannys don't have a crossmember bolted to the trans, they bolt to the adapter. A TH400 will have 6 mounting holes for the adapter in a circular pattern while the back of the adapter will have 8 in a figure 8 pattern.

Nevermind. I'm a dummy. My adaptor now is only like 1/2 thick. I expected it to be much thicker. My bolt pattern is right though.
