I have done a search on this site and found many posts about mufflers and several about quiet ones, but didn't quite find what I am looking for.

Currently I have dual Flowmaster 70 series mufflers on my truck with Hedman Elite headers and full 3" exhaust front to back (exits behind each rear wheel) behind a fairly stout BBC. The 70 series are one of the quietest mufflers Flowmaster makes and it is still too loud for the inspection station.

I have seen several quiet OEM mufflers, but they all have an offset. My Flowmasters are center in and center out. Does anyone know of a quiet center in, center out 3" ID muffler. It needs to be significantly quieter than a Flowmaster 70 series.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if they would be the right size, or be any quieter for that matter, but have you thought about checking into some factory diesel mufflers?

wow, flow 70 series too loud! they would love my 3" super 44's behind the bb, what about the new flow hushpower, never heard them but the name would seem to indicate they would be quieter.

Have you thought of using a resonator? I know Flowmaster says you can use the Hushpowers as a resonator inline before the muffler. Also a H-pipe or X-pipe can quiet it down, not by much, but it will make the note a little softer.

Borla's XS line is getting good reviews for quietness combined with good flow.

I've been exploring quiet but good flowing mufflers lately and well...not finding much...

I'll take a look at those. Right now I'm just looking for a set to bolt in to get a sticker. I really don't care how they flow.

Just go to the local muffler shop and see if they have any take-off OEM mufflers. Most of the newer trucks have exactly what you are talking about, free-flowing and quiet (loud does not equal better flowing). The biggest downside is that they are usually fairly large.

Another vote for using either the Hushpower or Magnaflow universal mufflers. Either of those choices are quiet until you have your foot to the floor.

I,m a MASS guy also. Change inspection stations. They all have different levels of "acceptable". I have headers, no cats, 2.5 inch pipe and super 40's flomasters and still pass every year, and its on the "throaty" side. Time to give your money to someone else. Good luck !

Supposedly the new regulations went into effect 10/1/08. Have you tried to get a sticker since then? I have been told they tie the inspector's license to the inspector's driver's license, so if they get caught passing a faulty vehicle they can lose their driver's license....
