anybody do a rack & pinion steering convo on their rigs?

My boss and I were discussing crossover steering tonight. Turns out he has a mustang r&p on that monster Ramcharger of his...:eek1:

has some homemade brackets, got it mounted right on the axle. Double steering shafts with an idler, works fine! uses frickin forged hiem joints of a 3 point tractor accessory drive for end links!

I'm gonna have to go visit him again...he loves teaching me stuff...mainly because I'm honest about what I know and don't know.

ya but inner tie rods are smaller than avg 1/2 ton stuff our era used. and inner guts dont like being forced around like offroad beatings would do.

thats only problems i see.

but if street queen ya prob be just fine.

The other big problem is figuring out how to make an adjustable/flexible steering input shaft from the column to the rack on the axle. Something that's not going to come undone when the suspension flexes out, even over bumps for a street queen. That would be the scariest part of the whole thing.

Only way i see making that work is to link it. Then have the steering shaft run parallel to the links and have your steering wheel in the middle of the truck lol.

Kinda ghetto.

If your looking for different approaches try this thread. I thought it was kinda neat.

I have been toying with the idea for a few years now, and other than the fact they ar enot built strong enough for our abuse, the biggest hurdle for me has been the steering shaft, I have figured out a solution, but it involves a slip shaft and a couple of U joints, but I wouldn't put it on anything with bigger than 35" tires.

that's what I was thinking, particularly since I'm going with 52" springs....

here's a pic of my Boss' rig, he says it has r&p...it's strictly a racer, but as you can see, it still flexes...:D
