What would be the benefits of converting my r12 system to 134a, other being able to swap in a vortec motor?

The main one would be that unless you are licensed, you can't buy R12. Another would be the price of R12 compared to 134A. If the system is sealed and working then leave it alone. If it is empty you will want to convert it. It will be much cheaper to do the conversion than to have it filled with R12

Can you even buy R12 in the U.S.? I don't think you can. Of course you could take your truck for a drive south of the border. I've heard of some trucks being miraculously refilled down there.:D I would just do the conversion.

R-12 cools WAY better, especially at low RPM's, like sitting in traffic. My '91 S-Jimmy was converted to r134a and I'd love to have it filled with R-12 once again. :(

Ok guys, this sounds like something I want to do. Would this also put less stress on the motor?

If you change out the condensor to a new aftermarket unit for your truck that is designed for 134, then it should work just as good with R12.

The problem is that 134 needs more condensing than 12 because it's less efficient than 12.

I have a TON of R12 systems still left, infact I've only got a couple of late model pickups that are actually 134A around here. I use FREEZE12 in a lot of my R12 systems that have really slow leaks that I can't find. Tractors and combines especially. On a couple of my systems that don't leak, I still use R12 in them.

How do you know if it's designed for 134? Are all of the aftermarket stock replacements designed to work with 134 or do you need to ask for something different?

I too would like to know where to buy the conversion "stuff". Will any auto parts store know what I need and have the "stuff" on hand? Can I order from Summit or someone?

all auto parts stores sell the stuff to convert it to 134a. technically, its illegal to drain r12 out of the system by yourself, you are suposed to have a shop suck it all out, but that doesnt stop people from doing it anyways.
