This is a quick post about the new refrigerant that is showing up in cars these days. Its a real witch's brew that would never be considered except for misguided and dishonest government regulations.
Its called R1234yf.
Among its good points, is the fact that it requires an entirely new service system to work with it, and the mandated qualifications for those systems are some of the most nanny state, do it our way or not at all, restrictive garbage I have run into in years.
I will include a link to tell more about the stuff and what is needed, but I mainly wanted to put this out there:
If you are around a newer model car and see indications of fire from under the hood, such as after a wreck, or if its just sitting there running and you see smoke, RUN UPWIND as quick as you can.
This gas is flammable, not as much as gasoline, but it produces an incredibly deadly gas when it burns. In fact, Mercedes was so shocked by how well it burns, and the gas that is given off, they refused to use it in their cars, and is trying to use R744 instead. Which is why my other thread was written.
Here is an old link to the fight. Not sure what the outcome was, but I am coming into this thing late.

Not only will it eat out your lungs, eyes, other things, but unless I am mistaken it acts as an anesthetic which means it deadens the nerves so you do not feel any damage occurring until its too late.
Leave it to government to put something like that in our cars because of a made up crises called ozone depletion.
Here is one link, these guys are trying to put a good spin on the situation.
Pay close attention to the service machine specs.

from a tow truck operators stand point . . . . thanks for the heads up :waytogo:

this explains why i have been towing body damaged cars of other brands to 1 specific brand dealer for a/c work in the last few months . . . .

It’s also EXPENSIVE. And yeah the new service equipment is expensive and is really slow to use as you have to go through it’s process

We got a r1234yf machine shoved down our throat at the dealership last year. $10k hit to my bottom line. No choice, as an essential tool we are required to have it and only can come from GM's tool source. We didn't see our first car with that garbage in it until the 18 model year, certain Caddy's got it a year earlier. So not only were we forced to buy the machine, we got ours a full year before the first car would come to us to sell for Chevy. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, we couldn't even buy a bottle of the dang stuff for our machine until a few months ago.

GM's training indicated of the flammability of the stuff too. More mandated BS for sure.
