So where does the line lay between a street car and a racecar?

I think it comes down to can it be registered, and driven on the street and not a block or two . Can you hop in it and take it for a drive? If not it’s not a street car.

Some states do emissions and safety. Where does that come in?

To me I’d put up the street credibility of Cletus’ El Camino over any of the street outlaw goons.

The street outlaw guys have been questioned by many about running Drag week or any other drag and drive event and they always deny it give excuse why they can’t.

To me the street outlaw guys are merely racing race cars on the street, but they aren’t built to “drive” on the street, much less chew up a couple of hundred miles on the highway.

Bailey’s sickseconds2.0 takes that to the extreme as it’s really a pro mod with plates, lights and a horn. But he’s put in the work to make it survive on the road which it does pretty well.

So to me street car means just that. Legal to drive on the roads and built well enough to cruise, hit highway and get stuck in traffic.

If it can’t survive on the street, lacks the equipment to be road legal it’s a race car.

Larson and Lutz have been on both sides of that coin.
Frieberger stated that they started drag week to weed out the “fastest street car” by making them drive 20-30 miles? around the track area, then it morphed into what we know now. The TV show cars I’m confident couldn't make it from one track to the next. That’s why these drag and drive events have blown up.…its a tall order to run a 6 second car on the street and compete! Cool stuff.

Street car would have DOT approved tires, emissions, passing state and/ or local guidelines and restrictions with a registered VIN and license plate. You can get custom built car registration as well it’s just more work.

A race car would need to meet NHRA, IHRA, NASA, or any other automotive class requirements for safety and class specific regulations, but not necessarily DOT requirements as the vehicle is not intended to be driven on the street.

I would draw the line at the point where you need to tow it to the track to race in a street class.

It’s too easy to pick apart any street car therefore I say run what you brung.
Seems to me if it can survive the drive portion of a drag and drive event, it's pretty easy to say its a street car.

I'm the wrong person to ask but every race car I have had has hit the street a time or two.

As long as I've had this car, it's always been a pure race car but it has been to Sonic a time or two...
During the rebuild we've added a VIN and registered it so technically it's street legalish.

This car is just a bottle baby and has relatively low CR of 13:1.
On the flip side, I have another one of these things that I consider a street car that got out of hand which has a 14:1 AMC 440 with a billet crank, one off heads and a bunch of other fancy race parts and it has made 100 mile trips before without over heating or doing anything stupid and should be capable of making a drag & drive event (hopefully we will have it ready for a SICK event next year).

It's going to loose the cowl and I might even put the wiper arms back on...

Move to a different state
I did and I'm loving it. It will be even better when my brother from another gets here.....cough cough @Fastereddie

Anything with a plate that gets down the road. I've been around some full tilt trucks that are street legal. Search "luxury prerunners" and be amazed if you race trucks are your flavor.

Did it & all I can say is WOW!!!
Basic kits start around 10k & with another 70k in add-ons and accessories... what were the chances of all the kids going to college anyways?

My Christmas list just got longer!
If they don’t get a scholarship, they aren’t going. They can learn to weld. That’s what I tell my kids.

To me if it can be registered, fast and can roll down the highway then it's a street car.

I often call my truck a race truck, but it will never run a race but I like to think of it as my "hot rod" until the 70 chevelle comes in.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that some of the Street Outlaw guys attempted to run one of the Drag Week events before they got their show and failed to complete the event. I do agree that being able to successfully being able run a drag and drive event would qualify as a street driveable car as would driving the car to and from the track week in week out.
