radiator brand question

I bought a radiator from Griffin years ago and they are/were the best aftermarket radiator back then. I can say one thing about aluminum radiators though, the Griffin radiators are epoxied tanks and cannot be repaired like others that are fully tig welded together.

I remember reading someones build that had to get a aluminum rad replaced and IIRC it was a griffin, he had bought it years ago, never used it and I think they stepped up and replaced it for him...........:doah:

I can't remember his name, but I think it was the guy with the fiberglass body....I think :dunno:

ya i know epoxy sealed . but there off the shelf all day avalible .

if i go other brands thay dont offer intank tranny heater/cooler ( i live in cold area ) and also thay dont offer ls swap rad both hoses on pass side tank . unless you do custom order and pay 700 or more.

the one i was looking at with griffin is under 400 out the door.

I have a griffin in my m1028. Working as it should for a yr now... Hope it lasts for many more. thus far, my opinion is that it is good quality and great performance...

Hopefully someone else has one with a few more miles on it and will post about it.

griffin off the se=helf as i want it 100% = 389 bucks

becool custom order not stock item same specs as the griffin unit = 650 bucks.

i know tig welded or epoxy sealed . but dam for the same basic stuff.

looks like i will just go griffin as i dont plan on welding stuff to it and or any need to fix it my self since i dont tig weld .

Dude, i dont know why you want both rad hoses on the same side? To me it seems like that would make things more difficult. A factory 05ish chevy upper hose fits right in place with the factory 85ish radiator and 5.3 water pump.

Been running Griffin for years now.

We have a custom 36X19 in the race car and it has lived for three KOH races and all the others in between. I would say it has a few thousand off road miles on it.

The Epoxy sealed ends are actually one of their claims to fame. The epoxy is stronger and more flexible than welded.

Griffin has supported KOH and offroad stuff since 09' and probably before that. You can order direct from them as well. They are also one of the few companies their size that you can call and talk with the owners if you know who to ask for.

Griffin is good.

dont have a rad for the truck yet. so going to buy one might as well get one for it.

also doing it this way basicly makes it a duel pass radiator.

lots of guys over on ls1tech are going the 2 hose 1 side method nowadays also.

thanks for the griffin info on offroad and koh sponsor . makes me fell better knowing the offroad use/abuse it hold up good.

I pretty much stayed out of the thread, since its probably been longer than you since I bought a rad.
And then it was for a Ford.....

My 89 with the super cooling package had a big aluminum one with the epoxy ends. After a couple of years, the plastic tank on the side cracked.

At the time, we had a really good radiator shop in town, and I knew them well. I knew the tank could be replaced, so I took it to him.
He looked at it, and told me that he could replace the tank, but showed me where the epoxy was starting to turn loose, and said I would be wasting my money.

He ordered me a new one, no idea what brand now, but said it was one of the best. So far, he has been right.
It was about 1991, and its still going strong.

Then, my father's truck had the same problem, and he went to the same place. When they started talking about a replacement, he said he did not want another plastic one, so he got a copper/brass Modine, which is also still good.

Somebody told me about this place. http://www.completeradiators.com/

They got one from them for a good price. But that is only one recommendation, and its been a while.

They do offer brass or aluminum ones though.

From a cooling standpoint, aluminum is going to beat brass hands down. But the early ones had problems, plus you better be sure to keep the coolant in good shape. Let it get just a little acidic, and you will have problems.

I'm old school enough, I would go to brass/copper in general, but if I needed max cooling, I would have to go aluminum.

i know all about the o.e.m style aluminum / plastic tank stuff. swaped so many over the years for bad gasket/oring around were the tank is crimped on to the core.

i can say tho i have never seen them leak from the core unless damaged somehow.

i am going to think it over this weekend and order somthing come monday as i need to get my butt going on this truck and drive it.

Brett, I got a Summit brand (made by Northern in USA) it works real good as long as I remember to turn the fans on! Cheaper than a Griffin too!

closest one to my needs is still to short and also has brackets welded on it. also it would only save me around 30 bucks . but thanks zimm. :waytogo:
