Ram Power Wagon locker

What locker does the Power Wagon run? The Ram website has no info. Truck Trend and Four Wheeler says it's a tight limited slip when unlocked and a full locker when locked. And I wonder if whoever makes it also makes the diff for other axles.

Sounds like the same eaton that were/are available in chevy suvs and pickups.

We had a rear axle model in school. Was a new 10 bolts 8.6 I think. Had the eaton unit in it. Was electric locking and posi unlocked. Rare option I remember the teacher saying.


Figure the dodge is AAM running gear so thats really not applicable for us.
 
The only aftermarket option that ever had a limited slip/locker option (I'm not counting the Auburn "locker" because it isn't really a locker) was the Detroit Electrac, I believe Tractech/Eaton discontinued that when Eaton bought Tractech.

There is a decent chance that the factory uses it's own supplier for such things that don't make aftermarket options.

The Electrac didn't sell too well, seems like price and design issues. Honestly, I'm not sure I'd want a limited slip in the front on a snowy road anyway.
 
When I put a 14bsf in my Yukon I want a selectable locker for it, and having a LS in back is great for icy roads, keeps me out of 4wd so much. AFAIK, there is nothing for my front diff, and since a solid axle swap is a long way off, if ever for this rig, I seem awfully limited on choice.

Use an H2 locker Riley, its an electronic locker, it takes some lookin but they do come up. 14 bolt SF don't have a carrier break and the center section is the same between the 6 lug and 8 lug

Its my plan when I put a 14 b sf in the back of the Jimmy

Yup, an H2 is your parts source for the Tahoe/Yukon. They had selectable electric lockers (made by Eaton IIRC) for the front IFS and rear 14bsf diffs. Pretty sure you can swap in the H2 front diff fairly easily. You may want to do some research on that though.

I do believe Eaton makes the electric lockers for the Power Wagon (AAM axles) as well as the Jeep Rubicon (Dana axles).
 
Problem is, my poor old Yukon is the 95-99 GMT400(?) chassis, and the Hummer H2 is the newer GMT800 chassis. I don't know if things will be compatible.:dunno: I do know that the H3 Alpha front locker rides in the same 8.25" carrier as my Yukon.

The 14bsf I'm looking at comes out of a 88-93 or so light duty 3/4 ton GM pickup, it had 6-lug outers, in some cases ABS, spring perches and shock mounts are the same. Locker, chromoly shafts and disc brakes would be the ideal setup, unless there is a 6-lug full float conversion kit for it.

Certain axles require the ring gear to be to thick or thin for certain ratios, so a carrier break is where they change the carrier the ring gear rides on.

Its a design thing. Its like the Dana 61 they couldn't get a 3.08 gear in a standard Dana housing so they shifted everything over so they could get the really thin ring gear of a 3.08 into a 60 housing.

So in a 14b SF if you are after 3.73s it doesn't matter what gears come in it stock, as the 3.73 ratio will fit in it no matter what. Thats also the reason the H2 locker is cool, when they do come up it will fit no matter what.

If you were getting a 14b FF and it had say 4.56s and you wanted 3.73 you would not only have to get the gears, but another carrier that would allow you to put the thinner 3.73 ring gear on and have it make the proper contact with the pinion gear.

That make sense Riley.

So basically any H2 locker will work in any 14b sf housing. No matter year.

That does make sense, I dun did lernd sumthin today:D

I might go up to 4.10's when I swap in the rear axle, prolly go with 33's at that point, but for my purposes, 3.73's are more than plenty for low range, especially with a slip-o-matic. Afaik, 4.10's would work fine too as they were a factory ratio.
 
AAM makes the electric locking diffs for the Power Wagons with the front being open and the locked, and the rear being a helical limited slip with electric locking capability. Standard Dodges trucks have basically the same helical limited slip just without the locking ability.

Never seen any GM/Chevy trucks besides the H2 or H3 line with selectable lockers from the factory. Also did not think the H2's had locking front diffs? I know the H3's had that option later in the production life.

Yup, I test drove one in 03. 2 switches, 1 for each locker. The salesman went through a whole demo procedure on how to use them. Ended up buying an 03 Silverado 1500 Z71. The H2 was just too ridiculous and I needed a pickup.

The H3 put the front locker in the Alpha models IIRC and they used an iron front diff instead of the aluminum case.
 
So the H2 DID come with a front locker? :thinking: And H2 parts will swap over to my Yukon? Coolness:pimp:
 
Keep in mind the H2 is 3/4 ton stuff. Do the research, I would think someone has swapped that stuff in by now.
