Jons post about PTO's go me inspired today. So I went and got an old ramsey PTO winch I have had for a while, for a full disassemble, clean, lube, and reassemble. I got most of it took apart today but needed a gear puller, so ill finish it tomorrow. Wont realy be a rebuild as all the parts are in good shape but mabey some of you will be interested as to whats going on inside of one. Ill get ya all some pics of all the parts, and a reassebly guild.

Now some questions. Ill need to make it look good again, so I have a few choices. The spool will get painted black, but the housing has a few opptions.
1) black like original (semi gloss)
2) OD green
** Yay a REAL "naked" opption as I can clean the old black paint off and leave the alloy.
3) brushed
4) polished

brushed finish and clear coat it..... you should expand your thread to include the pto drive and shaft from the trans or t-case

Exelent idea. I willl do just that when I get the 6.2 swap complete. That way I can pull the PTO from the crew cab while it has no engine.

stay tuned

If you are obsessive compulsive about your shiny bits like I am, I wouldn't advise polishing it. I wouldn't really recommend it anyway, it will probably get mud and stuff all over it, might as well get a color that blends in. Stick with OEM semigloss black.

Ok yall I have run into a snag. There are several keyways inside this winch and I cannot get them out. I dont want to booger up the shafts they are on so I have been a little bit careful. But I NEED to get these keyways out, any sugestions? In the past dealing with keyways has been a simple smack with the hammer and they loosen up enough to come out.

This coming from the person who doesn't own said winch, but use a bigger hammer, or apply more force...

What about a penetrant of some kind?? Would that even do anyhting?? I know it works for stuck bolts, but keyways are a little different... It's worth a try. I mean if your gonna tear it right down anyways....

Then again I am an idiot.

I found this in the shed today, dont know what it was for. Its brass, Would it be cool as the clutch handle on the winch?

I couldnt find my camera, but I found pics on the net that show everything.
I tore it down and cleaned all the gook out, then new grease on everything. I still nee 2 small seals where the PTO shaft Goes into the winch and I havent desided what color. Im leaning towards black.

I realy wish I could have found my camera and did a step by step. I can walk a person through it with these pics. Just some of the smaller details would have been nice to have pics of.

This one isnt mine but looks exactly like my winch does now.

I'm torn between OD and Black... Both are good choices. But I'm in anti-bling mode. Once I'm done with mine, there'll be no 'silver' (chrome or likewise) anywhere on the truck, interior included.

Looks like one of the deals I've seen in old pictures of huge ships...in the movie Titanic, before they smack the 'berg, you see a guy grab that thang and switched postions to try and change direction of the ship. You move the handle until the pointer is pointed toward "full ahead" or "reverse" or whatever...then the dudes in the engine room act accordingly (at least in that movie, but I've seen that before).

Also...since it's brass, it won't rust...hence, it's sea-worthy.

That's a guess...but that's a pretty cool piece you found.

I think it would be a cool idea to use that as a clutch lever, but I think it would be alot of weight on the little shaft thinger it would attach too...

But how big is it?? If it is small, I wouldn't worry about it. But the ones I've seen in the movies are pretty massive.

BUt I am geussing the thing isn't a foot and a half longer anyways. Otherwise you never would've suggested it...

X2 on it being a ship part.

Another thought...didn't old-school elevators use them? You know, the ones that actually had an elevator "operator" that took you to the floor where you wanted to go? But I still think it's from a ship...

Black seams to have won the poll, and Im leaning towards it as well. The shaft seals came in, NAPA pt#7443, so now all I have to do is figure out how to get that damn keyway out, without damaging the shaft of alum. case. Im thinking I might be abble to use heat on the shaft opposit the keyway, maybe the keyway wont expand and the shaft will. Dunno :dunno:
Heres some pics to satify my pic whoreing urges.
