If my passenger flat top knuckle TRE comes in from the top, can't I re-taper the drivers side to come in from the top too? If so, shhould the taper be drilled out befor I try to re-taper it? Any help would be great. I'm new to CK5, but now stranger to wheeling. Looking forward to sharing info! Thanks yall!!!!!!!!!!:waytogo:

I'm going to say it can't be done. Why not just install an earlier knuckle on the driver side as well.

if you retaper it from the top you will have half of the depth tapered since the other side will have the other half, it might be enough to hold for a regular size tire but I wouldn't trust it with a big tire.
If you drill before you taper, you have no more meat to aper.
If you are going with a bigger TRE from a one ton I heard there is enough meat to do a full taper, but I haven't done it so it's just hear say.
:D

What I'm talking about is re-taper it larger for a GM drag link end. The DL is larger all the way through. If you re-taper from the top for a draglink, there should be enough material left inside the hole to take away. I will you informed. I'm still waiting for my tapered reamer to arrive.

SO I guess I had all the right info.

AFAIK, all Chevy 4x4 had the 1 ton TRE's.

why not weld it shut first?
Is the rod as hard as the steering arm? How do you know you didn't leave any gaps where you filled the whole?

This whole thing (no pun intended) sounds like a bad idea to me.

I've done it a few times, wheeled the hell out of em including a friends running full hydro with way more umph than was necessary, Pushed the knuckle in half and the tapered hole was still pristeen. No worries.

EDIT: as far as gaps are concerned, the right technique is required. When you drill the pilot hole, you'll know.
