I think I know my answer before I ask, but holy crap $20 for a new pinion nut on my 14FF? I can't believe a guy couldn't use red loctite or something if there's really danger of it backing off?

Hey, I'm all game for doing something right the first time so if there's no other way I'll go ahead and get one. But I just hate to think if I have to go back into my gears / bearings sometime soon that its automatic $20.

Big contrast to less than $5 for the D60! :eek1:

New is best, of course, but I've reused nuts as long as they've only been on/off once or twice. You could always stake it and put a paint mark on it that you can see with the driveshaft installed.

^What he said. If you decide to go with loc-tite, I recommend the blue stuff. Pinion nuts are hard enough to remove already. If you use red, you'll probably need heat to melt the loc-tite to get it off and there goes your pinion seal. If I were going to re-use mine, I'd probably just do as stated above - no loc-tite.

Ok, good deal. I'll mark it and inspect. I've done such a colossal amount of parts changing and driveline upgrade now that it will just be one of tons of things I've got to go and re-check after some initial use.

I was thinking red LT only if there was this big worry that the nut backs out. I've read a lot of warnings that put the fear of god in you that it WILL back off.

I'm much more in favor of inspect it and just pay attention like you guys say!

I would and have used old pinion nuts. Usually only because of some type of odd situation.

I would use only red loc tite. If the nut comes loose you could be looking at gear replacement I have used blue before but that was on a samurai where it actually has a cut in the threads and a thin part on the nut to stake the nut.

Most pinion nuts are some sort of locking nut hence why you arent suppose to use them. If the threads are fine it is fine
