Still searching all over, not really getting definite answers I think.

Trying to remove the axleshafts to inspect and hopefully only have to replace the wheel bearing and seal on my 2wd Burb. It has a Gov-Loc.

I have the cross pin removed, unfortunately so are the spiders, which I'm having issues getting them back in place as well.

I CANNOT get the axleshafts pushed in far enough to get that C-clip popped out. Does that t-block thing in the center also have to come out.

I haven't personally taken one of these apart yet, only swapped out a 10b for the 14 currently in the '89 4wd.

And with the Avalanche down without it's engine, this WAS our lifeboat vehicle,, it's quickly sinking.:doah:

kind of stuck here, frustrated as well.

Ive never tried with a gov bomb in but you really cant push the axle in any more to get the c clip out? whats it hitting? Ive done it with both rear tires off the ground and you pushed one axle in, removed clip, pulled axle.

Guy at work had the spiders pop out of his limited slip in his Ferd expedition. Had the same problem, couldnt get it back together. Had to take it to a transmission shop, guess they got some special tool for it :dunno:

Shafts seem to be hitting that block in between the side gears. Just can't get the shafts pushed in far enough to get at those clips. I can move them, rotate them around, but not enough to pop them out, can't get that block out.

I've messed with open diffs with no problems, this one is a fighter.

so I've never dug into an older gov-lock but this is a newer one for a 8 inch rear end in my colorado.

you have this removed correct?

if so you might have to push in pretty hard, I know I damn near had to hammer my axle in, it felt like something was wrong.

thats as far as my axle went in after i put the g80 in my diff. to get the clips loose i just grabbed the hub and pushed in and out and turned it. as theres no fluid left so i'm not gonna lose it.

need 5 posts to post links. sucks

I got it all out, I ended up having someone jam in the driver side axle, and that ones clip just about fell out itself, once I got that one out, it gave that center block piece more room to move a bit more to the side and the passenger side one did the same thing.

It's all FUBAR though. I was hoping I was only going to have to replace the bearing & seal... no joy.

Now I need to find a new 5 lug axle shaft,, ASAP, like yesterday. The engine for the Avalanche should be finished up this week, but now I have no way of picking it up. :doah:

Lifeboat/back up ride just sank.. :-P

Stupid Photobucket acting up for some reason, new version, sucks.

If your willing to re-use the shaft, you can buy a "repair bearing" that is sealed and doesn't have rollers that ride on the shaft, nor is it lubed by the gear oil,to allow a worn axle to be re-used...common part, not hard to find...but some people dont trust an axle with wear,I've never seen one break under normal on-road and mild off road use though, when that style bearing is used...Dorman may make a axle for it,they now list many that were formerly dealer only items...
