how the hell do you get it off... (the rubber tube that is...)

my pinion seal is leaking.

im going to remove the vent tube completely (this is safe right?) and see if it goes away.

the rear end is howling a bit under load at speed, so im planning on a 14b swap soon... but i want to at least figure out if its the internals or possible just a clogged vent causing the seal to leak.

anyway... i got up under there, and i couldnt get the thing to come off...
i remove the clamp, but its just... stuck.

thanks :)

It's probably just old and stuck in place, you could take a regular pair of pliers and try to twist it on the tube then it'll come off. If nothing else, just cut it off, and replace it with some hose later.

What do you mean by removing it completely? It needs to breath, and left open water could get in it. Both are bad.

gotcha. i twisted and pryed so hard i was going to break the hose,
i started feeling stupid and thought i might be missing something (hence my post)
guess im still stupid ;)
it almost looked like it had a hard plastic fitting at the end of the hose where it attaches to the diff,
but its so covered in oil i couldnt really tell.

im gonna snip it close and just cut the rest off.

where does the other end of the hose route to? above the gas tank.. and then i couldnt see if it hooked into anything or if it just sat up there....

thanks

Run above the gas tank and is clipped to the frame rail if memory serves me right. There is suppose to be a stock filter type thing on the end of it. Good time to get one of Kert's new vent filters.

dug into it last night.

the vent fitting on the diff was clogged full of gunk/dirt...

had to cut the hose up just to get it off the diff, the gunk had sealed the hose to the vent fitting

right now im just running it with no hose, fitting exposed. just gonna keep it out of deep water.

and try to make it last me long enough for some 3/4 tons.

You wanna put something on it, even driving in the rain will get water in it. You also have to worry about dust and dirt. Mine was off when I bought my Jimmy and it was full of water.

i plan on it.
just trying to see how the rear end behaves when properly vented.

not well obviously,

i put it on the freeway today for about 20 minutes today and by the end of the trip i could smell gear oil....
there was gear oil splashed all the way up onto the gas tank...

it must be getting super hot in there for it to boil(?) and spew out of the v ent
the rear end must be done for.

just need this rear end to last me long enough to find a 14bff

the previous owner put 35's on this 10 bolt. and at 200k miles. its time to be replaced.

its parked for the day and im going to get some new hose for it tomorrow. have to go by the parts store to pick up a few things to finish the engine swap in my charger

thanks for the tips tho, guys.
cant wait to get the truck runnin like a top now that ive almost finished the charger.

Well if it were me I'd grab some gear oil at the parts store and some rtv, pull the cover, inspect and change the fluid, can't hurt.

already got the RTV and the fluid a couple of days ago.

i filled the fluid in the side at the same time i cut the hose off.

i pulled all the bolts out of the back, but the last time it got sealed up... they did a damn good job. i couldnt pry it free, and needed more time to Ef with it, but it was already 10pm at night... so i just added fluid and called it a night.

gonna tear the cover off in the daylight and see what the damage is
