I want to put a locker in the rear of my blazer; stock gm 10 bolt, 3.73 gears. Is their a cheap one that works good? If not what are my other options? I've heard spools but I don't really know what those are. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I ran a powertrax no-slip locker in my 87 K5 10 bolt. It's a lunchbox locker and cost about $450 to $480. It made it drive as if it was in 4x4 on snowy or muddy roads.

Or get the powertrax lockrite locker for about $350.....you'll hear the ratcheting noise when you go around corners but it's nothing loud. It's more of a hit and miss for the sound but like I said, it's not loud.

I have a Detroit in the K5 now but that's in a 14bff. And it works great also.

A spool keeps both rear wheels locked all the time and there is no give when turning corners. Could be dangerous going around corners if the streets were wet and you didn't know how it felt when it grabs.

Define cheap.

I put a lockright in my 12 bolt for about $300, that was five years ago, still works fine, couldn't ask for more from it

You'll hear various opinions, but if the truck spends time on the street a spool isn't a good idea. It's cheap, but it will always be locked, and will scrub the tires every time you turn and make driving a chore. Some aren't bothered by it, but it definitely reduces streetability.

The front axle I bought came with a Lock-Rite in it. It seems to work fine, although I would prefer an open front or selectable locker in snow. It locks up well and is not too noisy. A lunchbox style locker will be the cheapest and easiest to install option. I've also had good experiences with Detroits. The air lockers or e-lockers are the most expensive, but really give you the best of both worlds.

I've had hit or miss luck with lockrights.

2 failed and were warranted, I've since put other traction aids in.

Last one I put in was a ten bolt rear, 3:73 gears. Worked mint. No complaints.

If its a 4x4, lockers are where it's at. Hands down IMO

Don't chuck out your lockright parts if you still have them Jesse.
I might be able to use them if you don`t need them anymore. :dunno:

I had a lock right in the 14bff under my 1982 K30 3+3, and I beat that thing like a rented mule.

I`ve had lockrights in my old Toyotas and a bunch of friends did too.

We never had any problems with them...but all fairly low horse power rigs.

I'll throw another little plug in for lunchbox lockers. My bro put a lockright in his rear 10 bolt back before he chopped it up an went with rockwells. But he had it for a good 3 years or so and had nothing but good things to say about it. I just purchased a spartan locker for my front d60. I think lunchbox lockers have come a long way and are a great choice if you are on a budget. Plus, fraking easy to install too. From what you have described, I say go for it :waytogo:

no one has said it but he cant do a lunchbox locker if his 10 bolt has a gov-loc in the rear . he needs a open diff to install one .

if he has a open diff and needs to swap it then might as well just buy a good posi unit or full locker .

Sorry for the thread Highjack but what would be a recommendation for a front 10 bolt locker/limited slip? mainly mud and some light trails.
