Rear axel ring gear

How do I know what ring gear is in the rear axel. This is the stock axel on a 1978 K5 w/ G80. There is a 8.5in, and 8 7/8in ring gear.

The 8.5 is the 10 bolt
The 8 ⅞ is the 12 bolt
1978 was the changeover year
