Ok so i drove my truck for about 15 minutes at 35+Mph and noticed a damn tick when the tranny went to 2nd gear ( theres a shift kit in the tranny) and when i got home i noticed a smell of something hot, an unussual smell so i got under the truck to find out what the damn tick was and when i touched the axle it was damn hot (pumpking and passenger axle tube was the hottest) how hot can it normally get?? i mean my exhaust is around 1.5 feet away from the axle but i dont think that caused it did it

Have you done anything to the rear end recently?

If you can't hold your hand on it then its probably too hot.

Well i went cheap-ass style putting gearsin the axle i guess i screwed up when putting the pinion in there somehow, im taking the truck to the shop tomorrow morning.

Yeah i could hold the axle for long it stung.

Yep, that's what I figured, the pinion bearing preload is probably way off.

The setting on those two bearings are super important and if you get it wrong you'll burn things up almost instantly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news and I wish you luck but even 15 minutes is way more than enough time to smoke bearings that aren't setup right.

Greatttt!!!!! lol.

Would any auto parts like Napa sell the pinion bearing towards the yoke??

I already have a new bearing the the ring side.

Just a word of caution, be slow or careful or tow it to the shop, depending on the rest of the setup how bad it is it may ruin the gears, it will probably be alright but just be careful.

I have seen guys really screw up a rear end because they just kept driving it, good choice to get it fixed now

I agree with what was said above.

I would also have it towed for sure. If its getting that hot, its only a matter of time before it locks up on you.

Well i drove it there, but really slowww.......its getting torn up as we speak.

I hope nothing is wrong..
