is that a speedi sleave on the seal surface ?

if so you didn't read the directions and remove the lip after install as it can hit the seal body and tear up a seal .

also little trick when installing them . brake clean dry & clean then red locktight to hold and seal it to the spindle good .

also could just remove it and use the newer 99-up body style seal for the 14ff rear . its a newer style seal in a seal and don't ride on the surface.

hhmmm I checked on the pirate 4x4 thread and they didnt remove the lip. when I looked through at the leak the seal and the lip werent making contact, I could see light between the two. the seal itself looks untouched. On one set of speedi sleeve instructions online it states "if clearance is needed trim the lip." and another from speedisleeve "Note: In certain applications, the flange will need to be removed. Please check instructions that are included with each SPEEDI-SLEEVE or SPEEDI-SLEEVE Gold to avoid damage." either way Ill have to try that newer style seal maybe it will make the difference.

what do you think about the bearing marks on the spindle itself? Are they an indicator of anything? I was thinking if there was sag in the bearing it might cause the seal to be pushed down and leak. Thinking aloud here. Thanks for your help.

edit: was this the new seal you were talking about?

I got the new style Timken seals from rockauto for $11. Here is a link to the part # SL260002. It's a two piece seal so it doesn't rub on the spindle. Like said before you would need to take the speedi sleeve off to use it.

Awesome thanks for the link!
This is what it looked like before the sleeve. Are you positive ill want to take it off?

I tried those 2-piece seals on a Dana 80 and would still get leaks. I even cleaned the surface really well and siliconed the inside together the 2nd time. I figured that would ensure the seal was spinning inside itself and not turning on the spindle. Eventually I went back to standard seals and just accepted that it would seep a little oil over time. After all of that it probably leaked about the same as when I started - like a few tablespoons a year. With the 2-piece seals I would get oil on the ground overnight. These are the kinds of things that make me more tolerant of leaks over the years.

Yeah I hear ya. Im just tired of the smell and the brakes squeaking. I just want it fixed right.

Across the street is an auto repair shop, its been vacant for some time but a new guy has set up shop there.
I took the hub over and had him look it over and he could not find anything wrong with the seal or anything else. Just to be sure he put some RVT over the seal and the hub.
I slapped everything back together and he gave me some of that additive that glows under a black light to toss in there.
I checked everything again once I got the bearings set and there is plenty of clearance between the lip of the sleeve and the wheel seal, probably enough to stick a nickel between the two.
The breather tube wasnt clogged either, unless its clogged at the fitting which I doubt.
Im going to double check and make sure nothing is wet looking, get it back on the ground top off the diff and see if it leaks just sitting there. if it leaks only while driving it has to be a seal issue I would think...
