Rear Brake question

Hey guys and gals. I'm currently rebuilding my 14FF and as I was redoing the brakes, I noticed the guy who had it before me put both secondary shoes on one side and the primary shoes on the other side. Just to confirm, the "longer" primary shoes go on the front (forward) and the "shorter" secondary shoes go on the rear of the backing plates, right?
 
Ok, so if I'm understanding you correctly, the short shoe faces the front and the longer shoe faces the rear? I guess I had it mixed up if that's the case...
 
Yes, now you have it correct. The reason for this is that the front shoe applies first which then throws the weight to the rear shoe. Since the weight is now on the rear shoe you want the larger shoe in the position.
